Etymology of "Falkland"

[edit]

Request If anyone knows how Falkland got its name or what it means, please add this information to the article. Robert K S 04:32, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The text as it stands makes no sense, for the second part is held to be Brythonnic while the assumption is made that the first part is Gaelic - but there is no good reason for this. The Welsh/Brythonnic word "Gwalch" means "hawk" (both in today's dictionary and as in the supposed name of the Arthurian-age prince Gwalchmai). "Falach", "failc" and indeed "falc" are all irrelevant Gaelic words which should have no place in this discussion. But "Faleck" is not a bad, if potentially typically ham-fisted attempt by Gaels to represent "Gwalch". So "Hawk enclosure"? Why not? One would expect something like this for the breeding of hawks for hunting. So the dismissal of "Falk" for falcon/hawk is typical of the tunnel vision of the Gaelomaniacs. I am looking at Fife Place-name Data, all derived from Taylor(2005) The Place-Names of Fife, and the source of the second element "lann" is identified as Gaelic or possibly Pictish, not Brythonic. I have corrected this. In response to above, the best expert onomastic research concludes that this name is derived from Gaelic or Pictish, and that the folk etymology that the name derives from "Falcon Land" cannot be sustained.[1] --Lasairdhubh (talk) 22:43, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
