In the course of the upgrade, the new modern carriageway was built in the space left for the second carriageway during original construction. At the same time, the original concrete carriageway was demolished almost along the entire length of the route, and only a few traces of it remain. All of the remaining original overpasses and bridges were demolished and replaced with modern works.
I doubt that this is true. Images which compare the previous situation with the current one show that the same space, and not the space reserved for the second carriageway, was used in this reconstruction. [http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=25861220&postcount=687 In this collection of images from 1938, 1957, 2000, and 2008], for example, you see the same hills in the background, but the road is in all cases on the left-hand side.
