Article

[edit]

This article is meant as an overview regarding many important explorers and efforts ionvolved in the entire effort to map the continent of north America. Please feel free to add information on specific individuals and efforts which are relevant. --Steve, Sm8900 (talk) 15:31, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I see this is a fairly new article. Good stuff, really, lots of room to expand. I just have a few thoughts on its development for future editors:
  • I'd be more in favor of a chronological list rather than sectioning off by region as it currently stands, since this is the geophysical North America in which "no universally accepted divisions exist". That includes everything between Alaska and Panama, the Caribbean, Greenland, and Bermuda.
  • Consider moving to "European exploration of North America" if no non-European explorers are cited in reliable sources (1421: The Year China Discovered the World would not be a RS). These three "Exploration of..." articles all redirect to "European exploration of...": Asia and Australia (both chronological lists) and Africa (mixed format). Also note "Exploration of Central Asia" redirects to List of Russian explorers, and Exploration of South America doesn't even exist!
  • Category:Explorers of North America offers a long list of explorers just waiting to be added to this article. Plus, this article is the category's sole candidate for a main article, so it could be made the main.
Thanks, and happy editing! Ruodyssey (talk) 09:57, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Amerigo Vespucci

[edit]

This article states that the continent of America is "POSSIBLY" named after the explorer of South America (Amerigo Vespucci, Spanish "Américo"). However, the article about Amerigo Vespucci asserts that: "Amerigo Vespucci (March 9, 1454 – February 22, 1512) was a Florentine merchant, explorer, and navigator from the Republic of Florence, from whose name the term America is derived." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2800:810:43F:80A0:ADAE:BDFC:AEBD:656B (talk) 16:11, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
