the Duchy of Hull?

[edit]

It seems strange (to me anyway) that Pierrepont's dukedom would've been created and attached to an area as small as a city like Hull. Most of the other English dukedoms were attached to duchies on the size of counties (Devonshire, Cornwall, Somerset, Norfolk, etc.) or to other areas considerably larger than just one medium-sized (in the mid-17th c.) city. Cities were more often attached to English earldoms and marquisates (Queensbury, Bath, Bristol, Winchester, Oxford, etc.) Does anyone know why Pierrepont's dukedom was for a city, rather than a larger area? There had previously been dukes of Berwick, Gloucester, Buckingham, Marlborough, and many other towns and cities, so a duke of Hull doesn't seem all that odd. Zacwill (talk) 18:55, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
