Pronunciation

[edit]

Is the "E" at the beginning of the name "Evelyn" hard or soft eg "E" as in "see" or "e" as in "egg"? I have heard both pronunciations. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cedricthecentaur (talkcontribs) 08:10, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Longman Pronunciation Dictionary lists both the "egg-variant" and the "see-variant" for both American and British English, though the "egg-variant" is more usual in American English.--Earrnz (talk) 02:46, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

German meaning?

[edit]

"The German meaning of the name Evelyn is little bird"? Well, for this native speaker of German, Evelyn has no German meaning whatsoever, and I doubt it has for any other. German Wiki lists "little bird" as a "possible interpretation" based on the Germanic name of Ava "the origin of which is not documented with certainty".
