Inspirations and similarities - particularly: no other space based MMOs?

This is the Inspirations and Similarities section of the article:

"EVE Online obviously has a great deal in common with Earth & Beyond, since E&B was the first "Space Opera MMORPG" to hit the commercial market and EVE was the second (although EVE enjoyed much more prosperity than its predecessor, likely because it is not owned by Electronic Arts). If E&B were to be revived or cloned, then it would be the sole competitor of EVE (there are currently no existing space-based MMOs other than EVE). However, these are both predated by Stars! (and possibly other space-based online games), although that game is not in the MMORPG genre and operates on a much wider scale (individual players control entire civilizations)."

Now, firstly this isn't a very nice paragraph. But the part I'm confused about is where it states that "If E&B were to be revived or cloned, then it would be the sole competitor of EVE (there are currently no existing space-based MMOs other than EVE)". Now, I can think of a few other space-based MMOs: Jumpgate: The Reconstruction Initiative has been around for years, and Vendetta Online is there too. And I'm pretty sure there are others. Do these not count or something?

Also, is the part about Stars! even relevant, really? I know it's a space game, and you can play it over email, but what that has to do with EVE Online really, I don't know. It's a completely different kind of game. I don't see any citation of sources either. Cloudy 02:12, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

I hate to say this, but I don't think this paragraph has a place in the article. I would like to recommend that it is removed. I would like to put it to a vote. -Xander the Potato Vanquisher 14:18, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Proposal - I believe this paragraph should be removed because it does not fit with the rest of the article. We must remember this is not a place to put anything you want. It is an encyclopedia and should only include information that directly pertains to the subject. While the paragraph does deal with EVE-Online, it does not add any pertinent information and the information itself is questionable. -Xander the Potato Vanquisher 11:21, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Agree, the paragraph dosn't have a place in the article -- Richard Slater (Talk to me!) 16:55, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Agree, it's got nothing really relevant to do with EVE - and I have been playing it for a bit and have never seen anyone mention those other games --- TheChrisD, Halo2Leagues.com Head Organiser 18:07, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Agree - it is mostly speculation, which is Original Research. Plus, the game Space Pioneers isn't mentioned, either. Valtam 21:57, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Proposed Additions

I was wondering if the community thought we had space to put in some more information. I would propose adding something about the following:

  • I would also like to propose a reformatting:
  • The "extraneous sections" we have. I am speaking of the Quafe, EVERadio sections. I would like to see them in one section (we have too many top-level headers). maybe the section can be called something about EVE in popular culture or something.</.strike>
  • I would also like to have the Ships, Weapons, Equipment, and Graphics sections consolidated under one header as well. Everytime I look at out TOC, I think it is all wrong. Why even have a TOC if they are all on the same level? :P
Reformatting completed Fosnez 05:31, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Insert your thoughts above under each bullet! Thanks everyone! -Xander the Potato Vanquisher 11:39, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

I would quite like to see something along the lines of "the technology behind EVE" there is a fair amount of information around on the internet about the design of Tranquility (there is a great silde here) this could also incorporate the Graphic and Vista section and information about TQ being the most powerful computer in the gameing industry (which is a reference btw). Don't know about EVE-Radio, it should probably remain top level or be included a section with the CCG in a "Related Products and Services" section. -- Richard Slater (Talk to me!) 18:18, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Faction Images

The faction logos that were added into the Races section are great, however they break the formatting at higher resoloutions by adding a huge amount of whitespace between the Advancement heading and the text below. I proppose one of two soloutions to this.

  1. Alternate the images between right and left alignment so that 3 appear on one side and two on the other.
  2. Include the images side by side (or amalgamate the images into one image).

The other quiestion is do we keep the Character Creation screenshot or not? -- Richard Slater (Talk to me!) 12:42, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Seeing as no one has any specific oppinions on this matter, I have moved things arround, I have tried to move the images for the factions as close the the pargraph mentioning them. I won't be upset if someone reverts it or moves it arround again. -- Richard Slater (Talk to me!) 10:25, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

PCU Totals

I have reverted two changes in the last 24 hours because someone has edited the article to include the new PCU total (the wikipedian appears to have changed it as it was going up). We should only make changes to the PCU total when CCP or another notable source releases a news item, dev blog or press release release the figures, when someone does spot the news item we can reference the source and change the PCU. I know it is annoying, but as wikipedians we need to provide sources for the information in this article as much as any other. 12:50, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Do they actually ever release this kind of information, as the only place I've ever seen it is on the server usage graph on the main page of the EVE Online site? - TheChrisD, Halo2Leagues.com Head Organiser 20:06, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Yes it is released, if you look back at the history of the article most PCU totals were referenced. sometimes with direct news links (e.g. [1]), and sometimes with links to MMORPG.com or Allakhazam because CCP announce it through in-game or registered user only mechanisms. However if the numbers were not published by someone somewhere they shouldn't be included in Wikipedia, Wikipedia is NOT a news site or a forum for personal research. Any information added to the article should be properly referenced. -- Richard Slater (Talk to me!) 20:43, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm surprised they are yet to mention it publicly yet..... But yes, I do understand, that even if it is posted in the player forums, it should not be treated as worthy of being in the article unless it is made public - TheChrisD, Halo2Leagues.com Head Organiser 20:23, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
It seems that CCP has certain internal PCU goals, as they tend to only mention certain milestones for example I remember quite a big thing being made about 10K, 15K, 20K and most recently 30K. From recent Dev blogs they are adapting software and hardware to be able to support 50K, so perhaps that is the next we hear of it publicly. If on the other hand sites like MMORPG.com and Allakhazam both publish PCU totals I would be happy with inclusion as both sites have some editorial oversite. -- Richard Slater (Talk to me!) 09:13, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Linux

The article lists linux as a supported platform ("through wine or cedega"). Wine and cedega are emulation layers that do not work 100% (weird glitches abound). Linux is not a supported platform, and in my opinion should not be listed (otherwise all windows programs could be listed, as wine runs most of them with varying degrees of usefulness). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.197.227.248 (talk) 14:14, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

CCP are working together with the publishers of Cedega to ensure that Cedega continues to work with EVE, wether this fact makes it notable enough to be included in the article is up for discussion. IMO it is well worth a mention in the article somewhere. -- Richard Slater (Talk to me!) 14:23, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

EVE TV

As the current section on EVE TV is somewhat sparse, I would suggest that we merge the EveTV article into the main EVE Online article, I don't believe there is a need to have an article set aside for EVETV as however groundbreaking it is it has a relativly limited audience. It would get far better care and updates in this article. Thoughts? -- Richard Slater (Talk to me!) 14:58, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Seems a good idea, the current EVE TV article is a stub, and can easily be integrated with the main EVE article. Merge and turn the EVE TV article into a re-direct. - TheChrisD, Halo2Leagues.com Head Organiser 19:58, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm for this. It's better to have a user-defined description, it's more honest and gives an insight into how viewers perceive it. spiralJunkie —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Great planetarium (talkcontribs) 18:26, 27 January 2007 (UTC).
