Britain participation?
[edit]"There was no question of Britains direct participation."
This is wrong. As a matter of historical record Churchill did want the UK to be a member. He did however realise that, at the time, the UK's existing relationship with the Commonwealth would complicate immediate UK membership. The night before his Zurich speech we discussed this in the presence Legationsrat Cuttat, Oberstleutnant Bracher and his own daughter Mary.
"I have preferred not to stress the point, so as to leave to others the task of inviting us. One must not give the impression we wish to control Europe, even thought it is clear that only Great Britain is capable today of guiding her properly." / "Or perhaps you invite Russia first, which will refuse, and in that case Britain will be able to join".
Churchill's Last Stand: The Struggle to Unite Europe, Felix Klos, Ch. 6, p83. Primary source evidence for this can be found here Notice pour Monsieur le Conseiller fédéral Petitpierre sur mes entretiens avec M. Churchill et M. Montag (p6, in French).
Churchill also said that, had he been a younger man, he might have been the first president of a United States of Europe. This would be a rather odd thing for someone opposed to his own nation's participation to say. Klos discusses this in some detail here: Churchill’s Europe.
There's a lot else wrong with the article:
- Significant focus on Churchill (sure, he's important in its history, but not solely so).
- IMHO bias in the initial section due to a selected quoting of how Churchill thought a United Europe would *begin*; seemingly to imply Churchill believed the UK should *never* be a member (which is countered by other things he said, see above).
- A selective and minimal history of a organisation that has existed for over 70 years.
- Reference [10] is broken.
Dead letterbox?
[edit]Why is this website not actively managed? There is no evidence of strategy, tactics, activity, guidance or advice toward bringing parties and movements together to build coherent public voting action at the next general election.
Surely leadership via social media offers the opportunity of galvanising tactical voting to achieve change? 90.247.67.133 (talk) 22:23, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
Membership numbers
[edit]According to this article https://www.europeanmovement.co.uk/grassroots_newgroup the membership numbers is now near 22,000 so maybe someone who can edit the table should change it to 21,000+ GothicGolem29 (talk) 01:10, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
