Move to Eucharist in Lutheranism
[edit]This article uses "Lutheran Church" in the title, but is about the Eucharist in the branch of Christianity known as Lutheranism (there is no single "Lutheran Church""). The article should be moved to "Eucharist in Lutheranism." --JFHutson (talk) 19:52, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Only an American perspective?
[edit]This article seems to present only the beliefs and practices of US Lutheran church bodies. Surely there is information available regarding Lutheran churches in Germany, Sweden, Australia, Africa, etc. Some historical perspective regarding the developement of practice and doctrine from the 1500s would also be desirable. For instance, in the generation after Luther, how did churches in Lutheran portions of Germany deal with visiting worshippers from Catholic areas? Indyguy (talk) 18:14, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
- Being from the US, I composed the article a few years ago with the hopes of people from Lutheran backgrounds in other countries to eventually add more. If you or anyone else is knowledgeable on the belief variation in other countries, feel free to elucidate on that in the article. Shark96z (talk · contribs) 02:52, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
Adoration and the Corpus Christi
[edit]The section on Adoration and the Corpus Christi states that “Lutheran Eucharistic adoration is not commonly practiced, but when it occurs it is done only from the moment of consecration to reception.” This is not entirely accurate. It is true that most Lutheran churches only practice Eucharistic adoration in the context of Mass, but there are Lutheran congregations and, I believe, entire churches, who practice Eucharistic adoration outside the context of Mass. I can try to dig up some sources. If I’m able to do so, I suggest changing this to “Lutheran Eucharistic adoration is not commonly practiced, but when it occurs it is usually done only from the moment of consecration to reception, although there are Lutheran congregations and churches who do practice Eucharistic adoration outside the context of Mass.” Carissimi (talk) 20:49, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
- The Lutheran doctrine of the Lord's Supper follows the axiom adopted by Luther in the Wittenberg Concord of 1536 with Martin Bucer as one of the signatories on the other side: Nulla habent rationem sacramenti EXTRA USUM a Christo institutum, that is "nothing has the character of a sacrament apart from the USE instituted by Christ." The Formula of Concord, article VII established for Lutheranism that the "use" of the bread and wine of the Lord's Supper comprises the consecration, the distribution, and the reception. According to orthodox, confessional Lutheranism the body and blood of Christ are not there apart from this use.Drboisclair (talk) 13:45, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I’m fully aware that the Formula of Concord says that. The issue here, though, is that regardless of that, some Lutheran churches still practice Eucharistic adoration outside the context of Mass. That’s not principally a theological assertion but a sociological one. Yes, maybe they violate the doctrine of some Lutheran churches. That doesn’t mean that they don exist. But furthermore, most Lutheran churches in the world do not actually subscribe to the Formula of Concord as a binding confession. In fact, upon publication, many churches did not adopt it at all, including the Church of Denmark-Norway and the Church of Sweden, though some adopted it later. See here. The only five confessions that are universally binding in the Lutheran tradition are the three ancient creeds (Apostolicum, Nicenum, and Athanasianum), Confessio Augustana, and Luther’s Small Catechism. In America, that includes, as far as I know, the ELCA, but it also includes almost every European member of the Lutheran World Federation. Yes, Luther opposed Eucharistic adoration outside Mass but Lutheran doctrine isn’t just following Luther’s opinions. Carissimi (talk) 12:50, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
- I don't have any objection to the wording you propose above, if you can provide reliable sources to back it up.--Srleffler (talk) 18:52, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
