Proposed name change
[edit]I think the page should be moved to Chinese Panamanian as it is the format in which other pages are named (Chinese Nicaragua, Chinese Jamaican, Chinese American, ect.) -- LaNicoya •Talk• 03:57, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
- Many of those terms are neologisms and aren't actually used in English, just invented by Wikipedians by analogy to "Chinese American". In general I'm opposed to this naming scheme because of the confusion it generates. There's no overarching convention for articles of this type (Special:Prefixindex/Ethnic Chinese in, Special:Prefixindex/Chinese people in, etc.). "Chinese Panamanian" doesn't get too many GHits [1] and even many of those deal with China-Panama relations or whatnot; when you put it into the plural form, you have only 33 [2]. "Chino-Panameño" is a better accepted term in Spanish, of course [3], but it seems the English-language scholarly works are not referring to them this way. Also, putting "Panamanian" implies strongly that the article only deals with Panamanian citizens, but as the article details, there's been an influx of 80,000 Chinese from the mainland in recent years, who may outnumber the older community; many are not yet likely to be citizens. cab 04:26, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
To be frank, I think both titles are equally acceptable. I think Chinese Panamanian should go with a hyphen for clarification purpose, yet the title is Ok without it. Though the current title sounds a bit limiting (unless I'm interpreting the word ethnic incorrectly), it doesn't include Mixed Chinese, nor those of descent only, or does it? BTW, Is there a mail option in Wikipedia? or just the Talk option? Alexlamf 04:48, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
- "Ethnic Chinese" is typically used to mean Chinese immigrants and descendants. There's no real fixed definition for what it means or who it includes; a lot of the meaning is in the eye of the reader. Even "Chinese-Panamanian" might get misinterpreted as excluding people of mixed race; a while ago, a whole bunch of xyzian-Canadian articles got moved to "Canadians of xyzian descent" because some users felt that e.g. "Iranian-Canadian" shouldn't be used to refer to people who also had non-Iranian ancestry. I guess all these different terms should be mentioned in the lead. Finally, you can e-mail users from their talk pages if they have the e-mail option enabled (some don't). Happy editing! cab 05:19, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
I also think both titles are acceptable but just thought that since the others were one way, this should be too. I see no harm in it since other terms are listed in the intro. -- LaNicoya •Talk• 05:28, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
It should be changed because this article is biased — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikipanda99 (talk • contribs) 14:17, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
I'm still not sure why this page can't be titled "Chinese Panamanian" "Panamanians of Chinese descent" for consistency with the other page titles for the Chinese diaspora. The logic behind saying that "Chinese-Panamanian" is "confusing" doesn't seem like a strong argument because the term encompasses all people who have varying degrees of Chinese origin. The notable individuals section lists several people who are only partly Chinese. Clear Looking Glass (talk) 15:29, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

This article is inaccurate and biased. Not every Chinese-Panamanian practices Buddhism. Some practice Taoism or Roman Catholicism. Also, for many of them, their first language tends to be Spanish (especially for the second and third generations). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikipanda99 (talk • contribs) 14:21, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

Does this article only cover Chinese immigrants in Panama or Panamanians of Chinese descent as well?
[edit]Many Chinese in Panama are second generation, third generation, or more. So many of them speak Spanish as their first language and some of them never learn to speak Chinese. Also many Panamanians of Chinese descent also practice Roman Catholicism. The population count needs to be updated. The Chinese population in Panama has grown since 2003. That statistic is nearly 20 years old. Wikipanda99 (talk) 22:25, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Wikipanda99
