LUZ

[edit]

The whole Luz concept is very miscontrued. A lot of web articles seem to use this as a source, and they are all getting it totally wrong.

I lived in the Benfica region for 8 years. To explain, "da luz" simply means "of light". By light, they mean god. Lisbon itself is known as the "city of light". The Virgin Mary is known as the Lady of light. The beaches are known as the beaches of light. It's all da luz.

The only facts are that the local church and festivals are "of light" in name. And the stadium almost certainly followed the same concept in it's naming.

"The stadium of light". As in, the stadium that god blessed.

The club anthem has light as it's major concept as well. I'm afraid the whole "luz" being a region or place is a total misconception.

If you are "da luz" you are a follower of god. Simple as that. As far as I know there has never been a Benfica region known as "luz" or "da luz". Other than the famous church and festival.

The stadiums were merely following the local tradition of being "of god". or "of the light"
