Cameron Lake

[edit]

Former residents and old-timers will recall that the shores of Cameron Lake were littered with dead fish in the old days, and cringe at the memory of water skiing on the lake during the Water Carnival. I'm not going to take this out, but I am a former resident of Erskine (I still get there a few times a year), and I don't recall the shores littered with dead fish, nor remember anyone cringing at the thought of waterskiiing on Cameron Lake. It is true that the lake is not a good fishing lake, unless you are interested in bullheads, and that the lake is not heavily used for boating, as there are admittedly more desirable lakes in the area for boating. There was an attempt to stock Cameron Lake with northerns several years ago, but it didn't take.--RLent 18:03, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Response re Cameron Lake

[edit]

I, too, am a former resident of Erskine (actually, I lived on a farm about 6 miles outside Erskine from 1955 to 1966, and I went to school in town from 1960 to 1966). I remember seeing the dead fish myself--they tended to wash up onshore behind the creamery, in particular. I also remember the common recognition that Cameron Lake was the town cesspool, and how remarkable it seemed that someone would actually immerse oneself in the water, which actually stank of sewage and frothed at times. I don't know when your memories of Erskine begin (I assume you are part of the Lent's Drug store family, which I believe first arrived in town sometime in the early 1960s) and there is no question the lake has been cleaned up since the Clean Water Act in 1970, but it was a disgusting mess earlier in the century, like a lot of other places with running or standing water in that era.
