Formula needs definitions

The formula in the lede is missing definitions. What are $V_{i}$ and $P_{i}$? I'm sure they express value and piece, but are they required to be (e.g.) real-valued? QVVERTYVS (hm?) 21:35, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
