Untitled track

[edit]

I changed track 6 (Untitled) to " " since this is how it is listed on the CD (i.e., a blank space). Any objections? JJBunks 19:59, 9 March 2006 (UTC) Yeah, I think it should stay as Untitled as that's how the digital editions[1] and everywhere I've seen calls it. Lyrics for Mutual Slump

[edit]

Does anyone have any idea where the words come from? I tried searching for it myself, but everything points back to DJ Shadow. Thanks. -130.215.232.139 14:15, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They're from Xanadu (film), it looks like. Can't find any decent sources though. Recury 20:53, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lyrics for Stem/Long Stem

[edit]

I thought I read somewhere that these lyrics (where he talks about being in jail in Long Beach and all that) are spoken by Spalding Gray. It sure sounds like him, but I can't find any sources for that either. Recury 20:53, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have the the track and it seems to match 'Freedom' by Murray Roman.--TheoGB 13:55, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reviews

[edit]

Pitchfork has reviewed this album twice. The "91%" (which is incorrect in the first place, as Pitchfork have always reviewed albums out of 10, not out of 100) is rather obsolete. I think we need to include the new review. Perhaps we could include both the new review and the old one.

As you may or may not be aware, Pitchfork has written two different "Top 100 Albums of the 1990s" lists. I think it would be a good idea to mention that this album was ranked #7 on both lists.

Cover image?

[edit]

I reverted an odd change yesterday that claimed that the cover image is in DJ Shadow's record collection, not in some record shop. Anyone have a source (other than the current one) either way? -- BillWeiss | Talk 15:27, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Samples

[edit]

I'm somewhat curious as to what the source is for all these samples listed here. The album booklet only lists major samples (about 1 or 2 per song) and even then there are some major ones like David Axelrod that aren't listed. I only own the original release, so there may be more information that accompanies the deluxe edition. I'm not suggesting that the information here is wrong, I just think that those editors that added the listing should provide their sources.--Lairor 10:20, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Feel free to mark unsourced samples with {{fact}} to clarify. Just64helpin 17:29, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can verify the samples by searching the songs and listening to them. Simple process. Bradgon (talk) 05:17, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Many of the samples here are actually taken from the Solesides sample pages. Originally, a list of all (found) samples was compiled by Michael "DOP" Lane and regularly updated. Lane and countless contributors (mostly from the In/Flux mailing list) maintained a page with sample sources accompanied by audio extracts. The list was kept somewhat hidden because of so-called sample snitches. Of course, it eventually leaked to dozens of sites that provided carbon copies of the original list, mostly with erroneous information. (For one such appalling site, see: [1]). The list here on Wikipedia still contains some errors. 217.136.121.38 13:04, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It would be very nice if we could get our hands on a copy of those pages. The following samples are cited in liner notes of original release (not deluxe edition):
2. Building Steam With a Grain of Salt
  • "I Feel a New Shadow" by Jeremy Storch
4. Changeling
  • "Invisible Limits" by Tangerine Dream
5. What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 4)
  • "The Vision and the Voice Part I - The Vision (Ray Smith)" by Flying Island
7. Stem/Long Stem
  • "Love Suite" by Nirvana
8. Mutual Slump
  • "Possibly Maybe" by Bjork
11. Midnight In A Perfect World
  • "The Madness Subsides" by Pekka Pohjola
  • "Sower of Seeds" by Baraka
13. What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1 - Blue Sky Revisit)
  • "The Voice of the Saxaphone" from "Afro American Suite of Evolution" by In Motion
I suppose I might try to work this information in somehow sometime.--Lairor 22:06, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Album title

[edit]

Why are there two extra periods in the title here? Everywhere I look, it's Endtroducing..., not Endtroducing...... --Brandt Luke Zorn 05:06, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't really be an issue, but I checked the record sleeves, there are 5 of 'em (can't believe I looked!). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.179.191.252 (talk) 13:37, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My guess is that people assume (incorrectly) that the title ends with an ellipsis. As 58.179.191.252 said, there are five equally spaced periods in the official title (as displayed on the album sleeve and the label's website). fakelvis (talk) 06:58, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Solely Sample-Based?

[edit]

Not empirically known but Mr Davis is an accomplished drummer, so I'd be very suprised if he didn't record his own drumming on Endtroducing. From looking at the current state of Guiness I'd be wondering how much "research" they actually do on this stuff as well. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.179.191.252 (talk) 13:37, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm questioning this as well. Where is the actual source stating that the album is solely created using samples? Is The Guinness Book of World Records now a reputable source? MattMatt110 (talk) 12:04, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

i found this interview. http://www.contactmusic.com/new/home.nsf/webpages/djshadowx17x01x07 and they asked him about the guiness world record, he didn't mention it not being entirely out of samples. I was always under the impression that was the whole point of the album was to make it out of samples. Mr davis isn't known for doing things the simple way so I highly doubt that he would put the drums on himself. For example I have seen Shadow sampling the actual video of the drums for midnight in a perfect world live. 13thfloor (talk) 19:46, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

At the time of it coming out I remember being told that Davis travelled the world because it wasn't just to be made only of samples but only of samples from original vinyl records.--TheoGB (talk) 22:37, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The album is in fact NOT entirely made up of samples, at least not in the strictest sense of the word (i.e. the use of material already available on a prerecorded medium). In an IRC session organised by Solesides, Davis explained that certain vocals were added. (I think by Chief XL and Davis's girlfriend on "Why Hip-Hop Sucks in '96" and "Mutual Slump" respectively, if memory serves me well.) The IRC chat logs were once available on Solesides.com, but they currently appear to be missing. In any case, "Endtroducing....." is not 100% sampled. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.241.12.194 (talk) 22:18, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Crack the whip

[edit]

With a little collaboration it should really be no trouble to bring this to GA at the very least, maybe even to FA. Is anyone game? Seegoon (talk) 16:13, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"The album received near-unanimous worldwide critical acclaim upon release."

[edit]

Did it really? Can someone cite a source for this claim? -- OlEnglish (Talk) 02:49, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I tagged it with {{fact}}, as personally I find it difficult to cite such a phrase. Give it some time, then remove it if there is no good citation I guess. Taelus (talk) 09:03, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Excessive Ephemera

[edit]

Shouldn't the re-release be mentioned. It is a double album with the first disk being the normal release and the second one was remakes of the songs on the first one like a longer Organ Donor, a version of Stem with a different vocal sample, and the full version of Gift of Gab's recording for Midnight in a Perfect World (which is awesome). It also contains info provided by Shadow about the makeing of the originals and the remakes.173.48.107.113 (talk) 07:50, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah it should. Add what you know about it, and if you're worried about wiki markup and stuff don't worry, because that'll get cleaned up. The dictum of WP:BOLD applies pretty well here if you're interested. Seegoon (talk) 16:47, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Plunderphonics

[edit]

I just saw a mini-revert war between user:Dan56 and an IP-only editor related to the labeling of this music in the infobox as Plunderphonics. I read the plunderphonics article, and it appears that it describes what DJ Shadow is doing. Any reason this album shouldn't be labeled as such, regardless of the negative connotation?Timtempleton (talk) 05:55, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Most of that article is unsourced, as was the IP's addition to this article. I looked it up myself and found no source describing this album in such a way. If another reader wishes to make the connection themselves, they can, but that doesn't require a place in an article. Dan56 (talk) 06:14, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Experimental hip hop genre?

[edit]

Hello all,

I was considering adding experimental hip hop to the genres, so could someone evaluate whether this would be worthy of an addition? The album is referred to as experimental hip hop in many places, including DJ Shadow's official site. Additionally, it is very clearly experimental, with 9+ minute long songs, odd drum manipulation such as on Changeling and abstract percussion loops in general all over the record. Does all of this warrant the experimental hip hop tag?

Thank you for your help. 92.21.194.2 (talk) 11:02, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
