+

[edit]

You don't know WHAT the + means on the album cover. It could be "and" or it could be "featured" or it could be something we have never even heard of. So you can't not say its co-billed. Arjoccolenty (talk) 20:16, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So stop changing it back to "featuring" and put in the "+". --Wolfer68 (talk) 10:37, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty sure it is a feature. The back cover of the album has a "+", as does Amazon.com so that's ambiguous, and the single cover doesn't help much, either. The iTunes Store lists it as a feature, as does Jay-Z's official website here and here, MTV, Rolling Stone, and Spin. Thoughts? Yvesnimmo (talk) 19:34, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
All of the singles from this album charted in Billboard as "+" (not just this one). My initial thoughts are that it indicates co-billing (i.e. "and"). Since artist credits in trade magazines such as Billboard are not decided by the magazine, but rather artist management and record labels, I think that would carry more weight than how it may be displayed in other places. Amazon gets its product info from databases, and other publications like Rolling Stone or video channels like MTV can pretty much switch around the crediting as they want. My 2¢ - eo (talk) 19:54, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, okay. Hypothetically speaking, what about the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for the Grammy Awards? Yvesnimmo (talk) 21:51, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No idea. Did they list the track with a "featuring" credit? If so, then the + is anyone's guess, really. I'd think that if the song was submitted for nomination at the Grammys thent he label would do it with their preferred billing. - eo (talk) 10:37, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
They credited both artists equally, but then again, they did that for every song: "Nothin' on You", "Love the Way You Lie", "California Gurls", "Telephone", etc., so that can't be used. On the back cover of Jay-Z: The Hits Collection, Volume One, however, it says, "featuring Alicia Keys", so I'm pretty sure it's a featured credit for her. Nas & Billy Joel

[edit]

Does anyone know if there's any connection between Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind," Nas's "N.Y. State of Mind" or Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind"? I've listened to Nas's and Jay-Z's. So far it sounds like the song titles are just coincidental, but I thought I'd raise the question in case there is a connection. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Knightablaze (talkcontribs) 00:28, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would guess that the titles of this song and the Nas song are homage to the Billy Joel (1976) song, but I don't have any reliable sources to verify that. 86.41.33.224 (talk) 13:03, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Billy Joel's song received a second life in 2001 and 2002 in the wake of 9/11, so it's hard not for it to be considered anything but. Both these rappers would surely have known it.
I was going to call the titles "ripoffs", but, well ok, "homage" is reasonable too, i guess. On a related matter, is Nas's stage name an homage to NAZZ?
They been gone so long it's not so clearcut as with the song titles. 66.105.218.35 (talk) 04:13, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Parodies

[edit]

Several good parodies of the song exist

1. Torbados http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mawObchMnCE&feature=related] about the English town of Torquay 2. Newport http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNfbX6uvA6s about the Welsh town of Newport

They really need to be mentioned as they are so funny

Actually, this is the only parody that deserves to be mentioned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RJ69Xx2PYE Sadly, it's a better song than the original. 72.67.139.246 (talk) 15:51, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copyedit June 2011

[edit]

Hi

A few things came to light during the copyedit that need looking at:

Music video
  • Quote - hidden as it does not correspond to the ref given [1] and so is unsubstantiated.
  • Plagiarism - I cannot believe that this was not picked up before. It is very poor editing to directly plagiarise work, especially from such a well known source (MTV) someone needs a good kick up the arse.
" ... and the words "New York" scrolled across screens on the stage while a battery of men and women dressed in elegant finery played grand pianos." is directly copied from [2]:
"The words "New York" scrolled across screens on the stage, while a battery of men and women dressed in elegant finery played grand pianos."
I have marked the section with a possible copyvio banner. The text has several suspected areas - [3]
General
  • Quotes - When quoting from a source the quote should not really be altered. There are various punctuation symbols that can be used, such as ... or [] to add material in. If hyphens and spaces were used then they should be quoted exactly as that. Periods should be inside quotes when they appear at the end of the quoted text, and outside them if the end of the quoted text is not punctuated as such.
Sequel quote - should be:
"So I definitely wanted to give my version of it and my vision of how I see New York and how it feels to me[.] I wanted to do it for my style - more broken down, more on piano, more voice and intimacy - so that's what I did. I imagined, 'If I was able to sing this whole song, how would I do it?' So I just sat down at my piano and I kind of broke it down and started singing about New York as I see it, and it turned out great."
Here the period is not in the original, the dashes are spaced fore and aft, there were single quotes marks omitted.

Finished copyediting. Chaosdruid (talk) 21:03, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarism

[edit]

Please, be careful, I've just detected some plagiarism in "Background and writing". Some phrases have been copy-pasted from the web sites used as a reference. Greetings, мιѕѕ мαηzαηα (talk) 18:07, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
