Etymologic coincidence emiticon vs emoji

Can we really be sure this is a coincidence and not a neologism constructed with easy internationalization in mind? I doubt the source given now is authoritative. It might be a particularly natural construction, nevertheless. Either way, a note like that without attribution or history of the term seems dubious.
