[edit]Removal of "important"
[edit]This discussion started on User talk:D-Rock#Emmi Whitehorse and User talk:MNewnham#Emmi Whitehorse. I have copied that conversation here, with some editing for ease of reading. D-Rock (Yell at D-Rock) 22:24, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
From user talk pages
[edit]I'm not really interested in making a big thing on this, more to get a feel on your opinions. I noticed you removed the word 'important' from the first sentence of the stub article I wrote on this artist, and marked it POV. I accept that my knowledge in the field of Native American artists is limited, but I was only attempting to establish some claim of notability. Looking at painters on wikipedia, it seems acceptable to make claims of notability (Sisley - 'a very talented painter', Matisse - 'the leading french artist of the 20th century', Charles Marion Russell - 'one of the greatest painters of the American West') and I didn't think that 'important' in the genre was too hyberbolic. - In response to what you left on my talk page, calling a thing important does not make it so. To be honest, I'd be less likely to remove something from an article with many editors, but hope I would have the chutzpah do so. I think Wikipedia:Neutral point of view illustrates my thinking, expecially the stuff in Wikipedia:Neutral point of view#An example. D-Rock (Yell at D-Rock) 19:53, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
- Based on what the link says, would rewriting it too say 'the artists work has been shown in important art museums and galleries such as blah blah' work for you, which shows the that the artist has notability from an art history and cultural perspective and not just commercially such as Thomas Kinkade which was what I was trying to get across. Continued discussion
[edit]- Yes, I think that works, but again, "important" is (or at least, should be) redundant. If the statement reads "Emmi Whitehorse's works have been shown in Art Museum of X and Y and Gallery of Z.", the articles on Art Museum of X and Y and Gallery of Z should explain why anyone should care about those things. I do reiterate my early statement, though. Saying a "foo is important," does not make foo important. D-Rock (Yell at D-Rock) 22:24, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
