This should be renamed elongated labia as Khoikhoi apron is not in common usage. --Ezeu 02:18, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No. It should be renamed back to "Hottentot apron" as that seems to be the used term. E.g. Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary, Sex-Lexis. Whereas "elongated labia" refers to something more general out of scope for the article. Rune X2 (talk) 15:32, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

this article is about one specific thing that africans do not about the medical condition elongated labia so it needs naming back to the apron title or this article needs a lot of work to write what its actually spose to be about Delighted eyes (talk) 17:26, 19 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah . . .

[edit]

Um, the paper that this stuff is taken from? Someone should check out the site that posted it. I admit that I'm not familiar with the author's work; I am, however, distrustful of anything seen as important by far-right white supremacist Holocaust deniers. Perhaps someone should look at Stephen Jay Gould's book and the new one on Saartje Baartman that just came out. 70.105.71.136 19:20, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Liz[reply]

I cannot see anything in the article that is blatanty POV, but it would probably be better if a different, more neutral reference was used instead of one taken from a white supremacist website. --Ezeu 19:52, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Better Picture

[edit]

Any way we can get some better pictures? The ones on there now look like they came from the seventeenth century! I don't know anyone with this sort of labia or I would take the picture myself. But PLEASE let us upload a picture that is decent and not old old old old. Ask D.N.A.- Peter Napkin (talk) 23:37, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nature or Nurture?

[edit]

Part of this article says that this is appearantly a genetic trait, but later it says that it is female genital mutilation. Can someone clarify? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.100.34.104 (talkcontribs) 03:31, 26 May 2008

Two Articles about the same? And incorrect information.

[edit]

There are two articles on wikipedia. This one (elongated labia) and labia elongation. The labia elongation article is much better written and more accurate.

Additionally, this article (elongated labia) says that this practice falls under genital mutilation. The UN has revoked its classification of this terminology because in Uganda and other parts of Africa the practice is primarily used to enhance sexual pleasure for both men and women, and as a rape deterrent. Advocates say that it's not mutilation because the purpose is not to harm the girl or to control it, but rather to enhance her life. Also, the girl does it herself and is natural - no cutting or anything of the sort.

See Sylvia Tamale's article "The Right to Culture and the Culture of Rights: A Critical Perspective on Women's Sexual Rights in Africa" and also the article called "Labia Elongation" here on wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.100.229.174 (talk) 18:39, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Myth

[edit]

The second source, Wit over zwart by Jan Nederveen Pieterse, states that the 'Hottentot Apron' is a myth. It even does so in the title, The Female Hottentot, with natural Apron. A medical myth. At the moment, this article simply restates a hundreds of years old colonialist myth as fact. Given the comment from 8 February 2011 I suggest we delete this page and simply redirect to the page on Labia stretching. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2a02:2455:2dc:4f00:1076:c525:cc2a:5f77 (talk) 21:23, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
