Year of birth
[edit]@Pokelova: Nice find on that obituary. Other sources differ on her date of birth.
Elizabeth was her parents' first child, and they married in 1838. In St Peter's Church in Onehunga, the register says she was born in 1842 at "Dublin B". In an interview in 1894, Elizabeth said she was born in Caithness and arrived in New Zealand (in 1852) aged seven, which suggests the birth year of 1845 as was in this article previously.[1]
It may be worth adding this discrepancy in birth dates to the article. See note a in Kate Sheppard or footnote 1 in Tom Neale for how I have previously dealt with such conflicting information.

- I've had a quick look at Scottish birth / baptism records for the period and there's nothing for Elizabeth Oman, daughter of George and Eleanor,[2] in Caithness during the period in question. However, the 1851 census has the family of George and Eleanor, with daughters Elizabeth, aged 10, and Eleanor, aged 8, at Barrock Mains, Caithness. Seems like the right people. George is aged 43, and listed as a groom and Chelsea Pensioner. Eleanor, his wife, is listed as aged 38 and born in Ireland. Daughter Elizabeth, aged 10, is listed as being born in Ireland, and Eleanor, aged 8, is listed as being born in Australia. This tallies with the 99th Regiment of Foot, in which George served, being in Australia at the time, and also with a birth entry in the NSW records. Obviously thats all original research, but adds some weight to the St Peter's Church entry of Elizabeth's birth being at "Dublin B". It also supports the 1840 birth year. Elizabeth Yates' entry in the DNZB notes that "little is known about her early life of education" and gives an eight-year range for her birth, so somebody needs to research, write and publish a paper on her early life!
