McCord had been secretary of state in the administration of a Democratic president who, after losing the Democratic nomination for a second term, was re-elected as an independent. At the end of Season 5, it is mentioned that, when she is offered the Republican Party nomination, that the Republican party is the one that is worse on climate change. That is the reason Dalton was rejected for a second term by his party. So she was in the administration of a Republican president, however after winning a second term as an independent, his successor, Elizabeth McCord also runs as an independent. She mentions it in the penultimate episode of Season 5. - Chavoryn
