Area
[edit]If anyone can find a better number for the area, please put it in the infobox. Here's how I came up with the 27,000 acre number. I think it's good enough, but a citation for the actual number in black and white (or '1' and '0', as the data case may be) would be superior.
I could not find the area on the NWSR website. The National Atlas has a shapefile containing GIS data for all federal lands that includes the Eleven Point NWSR.[1] The data includes areas for all parcels, but they're given in square degrees. I bet the {{convert}} template does not deal in deg2. I assume the measure is based on degrees of latitude, which are constant, but nothing explicitly tells me that degrees of longitude, which vary by latitude, are not involved.
A conversion ratio of deg2 to acres is needed and comes to us by way of the 80,000 acre Ozark National Scenic Riverway (ONSR) located nearby. I assume that a square degree there should be pretty close if not identical to a square degree here.
In the federal lands GIS file, the ONSR is represented by four records with a combined area of 0.034286 deg2, and the Eleven Point NWSR by a single record of 0.011737 deg2. Knowing the area of the ONSR in both units gives the relation between the two: 1 deg2 = 2333291.227149 acres. So the Eleven Point NWSR 0.011737 deg2 area converts to 27385.839133 acres. The magnitude is right, and that size relative to the ONSR seems reasonable. It also seems reasonable to round that to 27,000 given this roundabout derivation and its reliance on an obviously rounded 80,000 acre size for ONSR.
So I'm clever, but too clever is dumb (Ogden Nash). It would be nice to find the area just plainly stated somewhere. --Kbh3rdtalk 00:03, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
