This one thing an average reader wants to know about modern Eleusis, is: what is the site of the Mysteries like today? Can anyone help? Wetman 02:46, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)

See [1] and [2]. May you have Peace Profound. Optim 02:57, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)

"Eleusis" redirect: disambig proposal

[edit]

I have contributed to the article about the card game called Eleusis (Eleusis (game)), which has its name inspired by the Eleusinian Mysteries. Currently (since only June 13 of this year), Eleusis has been a redirect to the town of Eleusina (the modern name for the place). I would like to create a new disambiguation page Eleusis (disambiguation), which would point to

Partly since the redirection from Eleusis is so recent, I don't think it's very common for people to be looking for the modern town under the ancient name, and I do think that people who type "Eleusis" may be looking for either the mysteries or the game. (Of the top 20 Google hits for "Eleusis", most refer to the Mysteries more than to the place; 2 refer to the game.) Therefore, I think such a disambiguation page would be useful and would not create much inconvenience. -- Schoen 4 July 2005 08:20 (UTC)

Argh

[edit]

This article clobbered, without discussion, an existing article and does not provide a very prominent disambiguation. The card game was named Eleusis because people were already very familiar with Eleusis as a (classical) name for the city! The current article is redundant with Eleusis (game), although it provides slightly less information. This should be merged into Eleusis (game) and then Eleusis should be redirected to Eleusina or should be a bare disambiguation page. Schoen 09:22, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Requests for citations about climate

[edit]

It is since November 16, 2010 that references are asked for some strong statements in the article regarding climate.

In the last request for citations http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:AnomieBOT automatically changed the date of the request to February, but it should be pointed out that the requests date back to November.

It must be pointed out also that each time the request for citations has been deleted, but no reference has been added at all. It seems that statements not supported by references are defended.

The references in the climate subsection are:

1) the link to the WMO European temperature record, containing the referenced statement that the record was measured by minimum-maximum thermometer: and this information gets deleted from the climate subsection by some editor.

2) a HNMS page containing mean temperatures of the Elefsina weather station and nothing else;

3) the link to a feasibility study for an industrial project with a short descriptive part about climate.

Notice that the references (1), (2) and (3)

 - do not say that "Eleusina is well known for its intense summer heat"
 - do not say that [Eleusina]"has been described as Europe's warmest coastal area in the summer"
 - do not say that [Eleusina] "has been Greece's warmest area in terms of systematically achieving temperatures over 45.0°C in modern Greek meteorology"
 - do not say that "Elusina presents a unique climate in entire Europe"
 - do not say that [Eleusina] "is the only coastal area in the continent that can challenge the most continental areas of South Europe in terms of extreme high summer temperatures"

Interestingly, the reference (3) (http://www.eib.org/attachments/pipeline/20090584_eia_el.pdf) has been used in the past in anoter article (Athens) as a reference for the statement that Athens is the warmest area in Europe during the summer, another thing that the study does not say at all. It seems that some editors using that reference have severe difficulties in reading from Greek. Similar difficulties perhaps exist with respect to English, because once the wrong reference has been revealed, the same statements have been supported with another reference that does not say that at all (it was a study about the strong urban heat island effect characterizing the city of Athens).

Some more time is granted to the editors Weatherextremes and 147.197.190.60 (and any other one willing to contribute) to provide reliable and verifiable references for these statements. What they seem to say seems quite reasonable, some references must exist for that. If not, the statements without references will be deleted.

EleusinaEleusis – The most commonly used name for this town in English is "Eleusis", by far. For instance Google Books: Eleusis 101,000, Elefsina 484, Eleusina 380. Britannica has Eleusis as well. "Eleusina" is a rendering of the modern Greek name Ελευσίνα, transliterated as if it were ancient Greek. The modern name should be transliterated as "Elefsina", see WP:GREEK. EleusisElefsina – It has now become apparent that the most common name in English is Elefsina when referring to the modern city.

  • Support. Most common name in English appears to be Elefsina. Even in everyday spoken English it is highly unlikely that someone would use Eleusis when referring to the the modern city. South greek (talk) 07:34, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

During the 20th century, at the time of sustainable development, archaeological discoveries and industrial formation shaped the image of contemporary Eleusis

Modern archeological discoveries began with excavations in 1882. (Mylonas 1961, p. 12). Viriditas (talk) 11:25, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
