The bracketed comment after the last step of the first algorithm breaks the joke. If you look for the end of Africa then you already have an end condition. The joke is that a tyro doesn't know to make sure there's an end, but the expert creates a known end condition. Read the original Byte version. It's funny to be old enough to have read this when it was published and to see it being not only misrepresented but also to have sort of passed in to folk lore.
