Incomplete disambiguation
[edit]Regarding the {{|incompdab|date=December 2011}}
tag on this article, I agree that as the article stood when tagged, it could be merged into the complete Junction disambiguation. However, I think that it may make sense to expand this page and convert it to a short article defining semiconductor junctions and the different types of junction. Before I began work on this, this page simply redirected to the predominant type of junction, the p-n junction, which I believe was misleading non-experts (I'm one). I'm frustrated about not finding a definitive definition of the term junction. Perhaps it's trivial to experts, so they don't see the need. Here is my current attempt: In semiconductors, a junction is a point-of-contact or region-of-contact in which a semiconductor interfaces with either another semiconductor or a metal. Wbm1058 (talk)
Here's another definition that I found on a website: The interface plane within a semiconductor crystal, at which the number of P- and N-type carriers are exactly equal, with a surplus of P-type on one side of the junction and N-type on the other. And the Computer History Museum: [1] The region where an n-type semiconductor meets a p-type semiconductor creating an electronic barrier that will pass current in one direction but not the other to form a diode. But these definitions restrict themselves to "within a semiconductor crystal", which ignores metal (which is not a semiconductor, it's a conductor) junctions. Glossary: Metal-semiconductor junctions [2] sigh. no comprehensive definition of junction—not even a definition for metal–semiconductor junction. Seems some call them metal-semiconductor contact, where contact is a synonym for junction. [3] I think point-contact, the first kind of junction (in the most generic sense), can apply to both metal (cat's whisker) and p–n (the first bipolar devices, circa 1947). Also, junction (in the more specific region-of-contact sense) applies to both p–n (Shockley's first BJT) and metal (more modern Schottky diodes). Wbm1058 (talk) 17:04, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Broad-concept article
[edit]This is not a disambiguation page, but rather a Broad-concept article. See WP:DABCONCEPT. Wbm1058 (talk) 18:11, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
New name
[edit]I felt that changing the name of the article from "junction (electricity)" to "electrical junction" would simplify things. I do not know if Wikipedia has developed a rule or policy about it, but I think that whenever there is an appropriate article name that avoids disambiguation parentheses, you should use that name instead of the one that requires disambiguation parentheses, especially if the name uses the same number of words or less. My only concern about the new name is that there may be confusion with another subject, junction box. For that reason, I put a disambiguation link at the top of the article. If you want to discuss anything with me, please use my talk page, not this page. -- Kjkolb (talk) 07:58, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
