It's not easy being green...
[edit]Not having heard the Howard Stern soundbite, I'm not positive it's the same thing, but there is a type of tube called a Magic Eye or electric eye used on many tube radios as a tuning indicator that glowed...green. It is, in fact, what I was looking for when I ended up in this article...
