Birthdate okay?

[edit]

Anyone know further biographical details to confirm the d.o.b? Crockett's New York Times obituary (January 1940) gives her age as 67, suggesting a birthdate c. 1883. Obviously an actress is entitled to knock a few years off her real age, but Crockett would have been over two decades out. Also, an interview with her in 1893 describes her as a "young girl", whereas by the birthdate in the article she'd then be in her mid-thirties. (New York Times, Wednesday September 10, 1893, Page 11“The composer of the popular song, “Rock-a-Bye Baby”, which beautifully adapts and incorporates the old and familiar lullaby, is Miss Effie L. Canning, a young girl who was born and formerly lived in Rockland, Me. She is now a resident of Boston. Her success at either verse or music had not been especially great until, by a sort of sudden inspiration, she one day produced the now celebrated lullaby whose popularity, it is a pleasure to state, in the face of so many unlike instances, has been a source of much profit to the composer. Miss Canning is a tall, slender girl, with big brown eyes, full of the sympathy that finds its best expression in art.”) —Preceding unsigned comment added by RLamb (talkcontribs) 08:54, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If she would have died aged 67, that would suggest a birthdate in 1873, not 1883. If she married in 1881, a YOB 1873 is impossible, so the NYT is wrong here. find-a-grave gives her exact birthday: 4 March 1856. --FordPrefect42 (talk) 10:19, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
