No mention of "Man Proposes, God Disposes"?

[edit]

Any particular reason this painting is left unmentioned? It was a rather controversial reference to Franklin's lost expedition, so rather intriguing and edgy:

Man Proposes, God Disposes by Landseer

Date of photo

[edit]

The photo of Landseer is dated as 1874 and shows him very much alive, but he died in 1873. How can I verify the photo date? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.160.130.16 (talk) 00:22, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dutch paternal lineage

[edit]

The name Landseer derives from Dutch landsheer, i.e. land's heer, meaning 'lord of the land'; cf. heer to German Herr. Who knows anything about the genealogy of this family in the paternal line? In which century did they come from Holland? Their origin may not lie directly in Holland (or Belgium). The Vansittart family e.g. came from Prussian Danzig to England.
