Service history
[edit]Cannon's statement that "this officer was appointed cornet in the Scots Greys on the 23rd of January, 1709" seems to be an error. The 1740 Army List (p. 67) confirms that Pole's first commission was as a 2nd lieutenant not as a cornet - though it does agree with Cannon in giving the 23 January date rather than Dalton's 23 February. The 1707-1714 commission lists for the Scots Greys given in Dalton (p. 33) make no mention of Edward Pole. The statement in the Gentleman's Magazine death notice that Pole "served under the Duke of Marlborough at the battle of Blenheim" (in 1704) is an obvious mistake for Malplaquet.
