With all due respect, I have eliminated the reference to June McCarroll from this article. While McCarroll may have originated the idea of a center line in California in 1917, center lines were being used in Michigan as early as 1911. As far as I can tell, 1911 came before 1917. As for the reference to overuse of roadway markings, in relation to a shared-space concept, this would seem to belong in the article about roadway markings, rather than in Hines' article.
