true photo?
How do we know that the photo is, in fact, Eddie Lincoln? I was always under the impression that there was no known photo of Eddie, and the 2015 documentary "Living With Lincoln" - about the famous Kunhardt collection - specifically says that. Surely the photo would have been known to the Kunhardt's. I'm not taking sides. What evidence is there - from either perspective? Elsquared (talk) 03:22, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
- I did some digging and here is what I found:
- 2013 NY Times article/interview by Errol Morris & Roger Norton's authoritative website both say that the photo is genuine. The confusion about whether or not there are any photographs of Eddy partially stems from the fact that Ostendorf's 1998 edition of Complete Lincoln Photographs includes the daguerreotype while the 1963 edition does not. (And, actually the 1963 edition specifically states that there are no photographs of Eddy.) The daguerrotype was discovered in the collection of Herbert Wells Fay (the custodian of the Lincoln Tomb for 28 years - from 1920 to 1948) by Lincoln memorabilia collector/dealer Keya Morgan. I found one online source that said the daguerrotype was discovered in 1998 but the exact timing is somewhat unclear to me. Also, there is apparently some controversy about whether (or not) the daguerreotype is genuine but I have been unable to find any decent reliable sourcing from experts on the possible issues. Maybe someone else can find references that address any possible issues with the "Eddy" daguerreotype - I was unable to do so. Until then, in my opinion the image should stay as in in the article and elsewhere within Wikipedia. Shearonink (talk) 05:25, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
