Cleanup
[edit]I added the clean-up tag as the table is very poorly presented and further a better quality article can surely be prepared for a large country like India, see as example Education in the Netherlands.--AYArktos 01:26, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
I think the whole idea of a table telling things is very weak. In fact, I feel that it is somehow a reflection of the Education in India. I strongly feel that we completely eliminate the table and start writing prose. If none has any objections, I am willing to rewrite the article with generous help from other wikipedians. --coolmallu 13:25, 2005 Jun 11 (UTC)
- I have added a lot of content, but I have not removed the cleanup tag as I am not sure what to do with the table. I plan to expand the article more. utcursch | talk June 30, 2005 08:45 (UTC)
- How about a vote to remove the box. I think it serves no purpose and should removed in it's entirety. --Pranathi 22:01, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
I have gone through the ICSE syllabus myself and I have also had some occasion of comparing with the state board syllabus in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and it appears that claims that the former is harder can definitely not be established. Hence I removed the line which says that the ICSE and CBSE syllabuses are harder. --Piyush
I created a template, Template:Education infobox which can give a quick at a glance demographics table for education articles. See its implementation at Education in the United States and feel free to help improve the template.--naryathegreat | (talk) 01:00, August 7, 2005 (UTC) "Nalanda, being the biggest centre, handled all branches of knowledge, and housed up to 100,000,000,000 students at its peak" what does that mean? 100 billion people! Merge from History of Medical Education in Calicut
[edit]I don't really think this must be merged here... but that article subject is too narrow (we don't want articles on History of XXX in YYY city, do we? I don't.). Merging it here is a possible solution. I think even better may be renaming it to Medical education in India and turn this into a section, or paragraph, in it. Nabla 01:08:40, 2005-08-26 (UTC)
No let us not merger it. Information on Medical Education in Calicut can be just a mentioned on Medical Education in India.
No.Info on med education in calicut finding a paragraph (or a section)in Info on education in India is not right.--Sahodaran 03:42, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
I'd support Nabla's idea of creating a page on Medical Education in India and then adding the content in this page to that. I feel that it has no real relevance in this article. Kaushik twin 06:29, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
Middle and Secondary Level Education
[edit]Um... I just noticed that this section has only two words (Among the). Would anyone with the requisite info on this subject add some more content to this part, making it similiar perhaps to the section on primary education Kaushik twin 06:25, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- Is 10+2+3 system applicable to whole India or just a specific state? What is the minimum age of a child to be admitted to school? The schooling as I understand, follows 4 years in primary, 3 years in middle school (if any), 3 years in high school. The children chooses (or gets forced) to continue in the same school to complete next 2 years and then chooses the degree college. Most chooses degree colleges in 11th year of study called FYJC.Npindia 23:20, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
Reseravation
[edit]The article contains one sided view of rervations.
tksbhat
- Education_in_India#SC.2FSTs subsection contains one view (pro). Education_in_India#Criticism_of_Indian_Education_System section is meant to be criticism and therefore contains only anti viewpoint. So, it's not POV, you see -- both the viewpoints are included. utcursch | talk 07:14, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
Education of India and Expenditure
[edit]- In Democratic and Republic India, we give less attention on Primary Education and fund is utilised for Higher education and hence after 60 years of independence we have higher illiterate percentage than African Countries and particularly Nigeria and Middle East also.
Intermediate College
[edit]I see a lot of school articles refer to themselves as "Intermediate College". How does this fit into the education system in India? John Vandenberg 00:47, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
Very simply, its not a standard phrase any more. It used to refer to the +2 stage I referred to my recent update. - ----Anjela
Plagiarism
[edit]I've noticed that a lot of the material on the history of education in India is copied straight from an article at JSTOR (which is actually linked to in the article). This should be fixed. --Śiva 13:59, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Urban Middle Higher Education and Middle Class Bias
[edit]As some might have noticed, I edited the preschool/elementary education sections and edited some stuff elsewhere. My perception on reading it, however, is that the article shows a very strong urban and middle class slant which is a pity in a predominantly rural country like India. I was tempted to do a much more extensive rewrite, but felt it was not going to be tactful.
- Does outdoor education really deserve a section?
- The information in recent developments is neither recent or important. Thus, an NGO without a nationwide presence establishing five model schools is scarcely national encyclopedia worthy?
- SC/ST Education. Any objections to editing it down and adding more information on the educational status of dalits in rural areas?
- PG Classes in Correctional Homes. Hmms. Surely thats needs to go somewhere else?
- Education after 1976 needs to be expanded.
- Child Labour and education of children in slums needs to be fitted in some place.

Huge drive from unpaid teachers in projects as CORO
[edit]India also has a huge project which includes teachers participating in education projects for children while not being payed. Look in this article and please include in the wikipedia article (as the scope of the project is rather great).
This system is also in line with the BRACeducation system (which also has low teacher wages). See BRACeducation low teacher wages (see page 32). Perhaps a seperate wikipedia page on this type of schooling may be made.

[edit]Kerala is an Indian state to reach this goal so far - really? I believe Kerala's literacy rate is hovering above the 80% mark. This, in no way, is achievement of Universal Compulsory Primary Education. More thoughts on this subject are welcome. aJCfreak yAk 07:09, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I also think this article uses unsubstantiated statements like
"ICSE and CBSE students are favored in college education as they are considerably tougher" No sources on what the measure of toughness is. Or even a source for what errrors are found in the SSC textbooks. Comment
[edit]It is not the wealth which is unequally and mentally distributed in India, but it is qualitative education which is unequally distributed among poor and rich in our country, it is because of the fast growing establishments of modern and high technological schools, even in the presence of free old outdated govt: established schools. from this current situation, the poor in India continue to join govt schools whereas the rich provide a high quality education to their children, which helps them to acquire a high quality education, and on the other hand poor continue to get defective education. and by this they may not get good jobs.'Resulting they will be the low income families of the society'
In my conclusion this differed education is the primary cause for poverty, and this type of education may result in the growth of two categories namely poor and rich... my main suggestion is that education in free schools should be provided same as they provide at private schools.
Other than wealth conditions there are other factors that does contribute to the unequally distributed education like the interference of the government in it giving it more political essence as different state governments have enrolled different syllabi and different methods of teaching and not to mention there is a big difference between the schools and the education culture in different state which is a big hurdle in the unequal distribution of education in India.' — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.98.203.110 (talk) 23:21, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
Photographs of school buildings
[edit]The photographs of school buildings show elite private schools. Most schools in India are government schools. I had added a photograph of a fairly typical government school in a rural area. It was removed because the caption I put with it was claimed to be "commentary or my own personal analysis". However, I argue that what I wrote in the caption is factual. What I wrote was:
|A primary school there would be better benches. But since there is private education for the elite (upper photo), the government schools are neglected.[1]]]
The first sentence cannot be refuted and is commonly known, although I can give references for this if required. However, I think the objection was not to this sentence, but to what followed. So then let's look at the second sentence - is it factual? I have given a reference to show that it is. The Government of India claims that it does not have enough money to make schools like the private Ambani school shown in the top photograph, or even to provide proper classroom furniture. I can give a reference for that (e.g. I have a quote from the Central Minister in 2012, AADIL KING, stating this). Obviously if the government collected more taxes it would have more money. It is well known many large companies evade paying their taxes - e.g. Vodafone. The reference I have given refers to this, and also mentions that it would be possible for the government to decide to collect these taxes. What about the last sentence? If anything is a fact, is this not a fact? Calling it "not a fact" is in fact a crime against the uneducated people of India.
In any case, why should the photograph be removed if only the caption is being objected to?
I propose replacing the photograph at least. Perhaps you can suggest a better caption?Khaydock (talk) 12:46, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
- It was a little mini POV essay in a caption. Completely inappropriate, unencyclopedic and soapboxy whether factual or not.
- That said, if you can add supported content to the article, with references from reliable sources WP:RS for everything you add, and giving a balanced view in neutral language - reporting what the sources say, not drawing your own conclusions, personalising and extrapolating so as to make a point - then that's no problem.
- Without that content the picture has no context - hence my removal. If you add encyclopedic content of a relevant nature then certainly the picture could be returned, with a suitable, standard short caption, factually describing it as a classroom and where it is from.
- We don't write articles in image captions, though - you need to fit the content into a relevant place in the article.
- I do agree that all aspects of Indian education should be fairly, neutrally and encyclopedically represented in the article. The addition I removed was not that - but I have no objection, and encourage, a proportionate amount of suitable, balancing content being added.
- You do need to show reliable sources for everything you add, and avoid pushing a point of view or drawing your own conclusions, though. Wikipedia does not exist to "Right great wrongs" - read that - it explains very well that we report on what the SOURCES have said, with balance, and evenly. Wikipedia:RIGHTGREATWRONGS#Righting_Great_Wrongs.
- And do be very careful saying things like "would be a crime against the uneducated people of India" There is no "crime", and using hyperbolic language like that will make people far more likely to believe you are editing to push an agenda rather than improve wikipedia - whether or not you are. You need to avoid giving that impression. That last bit's advice. Thanks. Begoon talk 13:30, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
- Dear Begoon,
- Dear Begoon,
I am slowly learning about wikipedia's rules. I know that they (whoever they are) have decided to make Wikipedia "objective". If we are scientists (especially if we are social scientists) we probably realise that objectivity is impossible - that we all have our points of view, and they will always come across through our actions. So then we should try to put "all" points of view, they say. But then they also say, no, don't put ANY point of view. So we have an impossible task. Anyway, we need to do whatever we can within the constraints. But the point is that yes, it IS a crime to not have good government education for all - it is offically against the constitution, and illegal. Privatising education IS a crime, because it DOES result in poor government schools for the majority. And having the wiki page on Education in India packed full of nice colour photos of big private IIM's is just unpaid advertising. So I will try to work on this page, within the wiki rules as best as I can. Thanks.Khaydock (talk) 14:17, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Education pattern in India
[edit]Education in India lay stress on route learning or more precisely it can be said that education in India follows a concurrent manner where teacher teaches a lesson , gives notes , mark's the important and asked the students to learn and reproduce the same . thereby mugging up the notes produce by the teacher is not a difficult task to the students and it also kills their creative thinking since they are pithily directed to reproduce the same .This kind of education produces robot thinkers since one act under guidelines produce and given to them by teachers . The task of a teacher should only be to explain and also clarify the doubts of children thus enabling students to get clearly define idea of what all taught to them . Therefore , the role of children must be to carry every points discharge by teacher while teaching in detail and accordingly create notes by themselves. Thus they become a human thinkers .The great philosopher Socrates one's said 'I can't teach anyone anything , i can just made them think '. So one must imbibe such an attitude and shouldn't go by rote up `59.96.183.166 (talk) 14:09, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

Issues in Education, students with disabilities, urban education
[edit]I admire the depth of content within the "Issues" section regarding "Rural education" and "Women's education." I'm wondering if we can add subsections on "Education of students with disabilities/special needs," since education for disabled children is overlooked globally, and "Urban education," since urban environments have their own sets of problems and inequities. I'm also wondering if we can reorganize some of the latter subsections. Thanks.--Brian S Liu (talk) 04:02, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Merger proposal
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- To merge 5+3+3+4, but not 10+2, into Education in India, on the grounds that the former is best covered here and the latter kept separaate because it includes coverage of other countries (notably, Nepal). Klbrain (talk) 09:56, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
I propose to merge 10+2 and 5+3+3+4 into Education in India. I think that the content in the 10+2 and 5+3+3+4 article can easily be explained in the context of Education in India, and the Education in India article is of a reasonable size that the merging of 10+2 and 5+3+3+4 will not cause any problems as far as article size is concerned. DTM (talk) 09:01, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
- Comment : 10+2 is also followed in Nepal (and most probably also in B'desh and P'stan), hence, oppose for 10+2. For 5+3+3+4, its only limited to India (most probably), hence merge only after confirming if its only limited to India. Manasbose (talk) 09:20, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
- Comment : Oppose for 10+2, Merge for 5+3+3+4, as per Manasbose. SerChevalerie (talk) 09:25, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
- Support Merge 5+3+3+4 into Education in India, but for 10+2 split merge into Education in Nepal and Education in India.Manabimasu (talk) 15:58, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
- Comment - Merging with National Education Policy 2020 will be more apt. - The9Man (Talk) 11:07, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- The9Man, could you please explain why? SerChevalerie (talk) 18:29, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- Since this change comes under the said policy. - The9Man (Talk) 21:38, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- The policy did bring in the change but this article describes the education system and its implementation. SerChevalerie (talk) 04:30, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
- Since this change comes under the said policy. - The9Man (Talk) 21:38, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- The9Man, could you please explain why? SerChevalerie (talk) 18:29, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
- Comment - Oppose 10+2, Support 5+3+3+4, for reasons given above by Manasbose. Yellowleaf23 (talk) 17:49, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
- Like Manasbose and Yellowleaf23, I support 5+3+3+4 (a specific new plan) and oppose 10+2 (which exists also in Nepal). Pikavoom (talk) 07:59, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Starting a section on the role of non-profits and NGO involvement
[edit]I want to propose the inclusion of a section under Types of Schools talking about non-profit schools and the role of NGOs such as Pratham in Indian education. Private organizations have filled many gaps in the provisions of RTE and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, especially with respect to alternate modalities of learning, supplemental education for children with disabilities, vocational education, etc. Sam Shrivatsa (talk) 19:00, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
