Birthplace

Some sources say that Cartwright was born in Marham, Nottinghamshire. The only map I have shows a Marham in Norfolk. Which is correct? Enlightenment will be welcome. Thanks! - Astrochemist (talk) 04:02, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lineage and Birth

Are the quoted dates for his birth correct? Looking at parish register transcriptions for Marnham (not Marham) St Wilfrid, Edmund was born 13 April 1743 to William & Ann Cartwright, and baptised on 14 April 1743, the very next day. It looks there were 8 children, although there were previous children called Edmund and George who must have died very young. The following vital-event dates are available in the parish records of Marnham St. Wilfrid, Nottinghamshire. These figures were obtained from the transcriptions of the Nottinghamshire Family History Society.

As mentioned above, the birth date differs from that quoted here. In fact, the erroneous place-of-birth ("Marham", now corrected), and this quoted date of 24 Apr 1743, have both been copied blindly in publications and on the Internet, but I have not seen a single citation for the data source. if anyone is aware of any work reconstructing Edmund's family, using original research, then it would be good to cite it on this page.TonyP (talk) 13:21, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That would be very good step in the right direction -- thanks for finding that source. It doesn't explain the conflict, though, and I feel that it should be noted somewhere in the main article until there is a resolution. For instance, where did the date in the biography come from? It's also possible that the transcriptions I have tabulated were inaccurate. Unfortunately, I would have to call into the Nottingham Archive to see the originals, or images therefore, because they are not available online anywhere (I now live hundreds of miles from my home town). A possible resolution, here: there are 11 days difference between the birthdate transcribed from the register and the later quoted ones. Combined with the 1743 year, which predates the Calendar Act, then the register must be recording the date according to the Julian calendar and the later figures adjusted for the Gregorian calendar. I am happy with this explanation. If you add a citation for that biography, maybe you could note this in case anyone else spots the difference.TonyP (talk) 11:19, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Samuel or Edmund Cartwright?

The image used on this article, which claims to be a picture of Edmund Cartwright, is the same image used on Samuel Cartwright's wiki page, claiming to be him. I'm not sure which is which, but I thought I should bring it up.
