Square miles or metres

[edit]

The area of the East Africa Syndicate land grant is given as both 500 square miles and 500 square metres in the article. There is big difference between these measurements, and they cannot both be correct. JonH (talk) 22:41, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone read these comments? JonH (talk) 15:44, 21 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Occasionally.
While it would be entirely possible using modern construction practices to provide housing for several thousand people in 1/44th of a Manhattan city block, it seems unlikely that skyscrapers were in the plan for the jungles of Kenya in 1902.
The confusion may be traceable to the s:1911 Encyclopædia Britannica/British East Africa article, which was clearly utilized in developing our second reference to the grant; it refers to "a grant of 500 sq. m." In 2014, this would be widely recognized as meaning metres; in 1911, not so much so. Consider also that the EB1911 article is peppered with other uses of the abbreviation "m." do describe distances (e.g., a coast of 400 m.) and areas where small units such as metre would not normally be used.
Googling east africa syndicate yields a couple of reproductions of primary sources that spell out "miles" for the grant size. I think a change to square miles is fairly safe. 2600:1006:B12E:AF89:5AD:4287:E314:1B02 (talk) 20:44, 21 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
