Career

i was wondering if the quote from his website was supposed to be just the immediately following sentence? or was it supposed to be the entire thing—from "Quoting from the Earl Nightingale official website:" to the "inline citation (#8)."

clicking the reference took me here: http://www.earlnightingale.com/About_Us.html but none of those 6 sentences were on that page. i couldn't find them on other pages on that site, either. if a valid reference is found, i suggest making it a block quote, if it's the entire 6 sentences.Colbey84 (talk) 07:36, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Infobox military person < this is not the best choice

I recommend changing the infobox here from Template:Infobox military person to Template:Infobox person. There is a key distinction between a "military person" versus a person who was in the military. That is to say, I would see it to be proper that if a significant aspect of a person's notability has to do with their experience in the military, then that would be the time to use the military person infobox. But if it is not a major aspect of that person's life, and has little to do with why we have an article about them in Wikipedia, then it can give a distorted picture by presenting their article with this type of infobox.

As this Nightingale article currently stands, it presents a total of 3 images. And all three are icons in this military infobox, including the American flag, the flag of the US Marine Corps, and the rank of Corporal. A quick scan of the page gives a first impression that this is a person who is notable for having been a war fighter. Yet that is not the case. His military service is not what he is notable for. In fact, the article contains the statement:

"Other than Pearl Harbor, it is unknown if Nightingale experienced combat."

There is absolutely nothing in the lede which indicates that he was in the military, and that is a proper characterization of his notability. This article will be greatly improved by switching to an infobox which fits with the info presented in the lede. If there was an infobox specific to Motivational speaker or Author, that would be even better. But I don't see those options on the list. So Infobox person appears to be the best choice, from the options I see. -- Lexi sioz (talk) 08:45, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

Ok, the infobox is now changed, and the image in that box is the cover of his book, which is what he is perhaps best known for. I looked back at the article history and found that the Military person infobox had been added in this edit from 11 Feb 2013. That editor made that change without using a handle here, so I don't know who it was. If anyone would like to present a case as to why the article was better in the previous version, please post your argument here. And either way, it would be nice if we can find a photo of Nightingale to add to the infobox. Surely one exists that is not encumbered by copyright issues. -- Lexi sioz (talk) 09:22, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

Also,
My changes today did clobber one item of info, and that is his USMC rank as having been a Corporal. I looked through the reference posted in the section which discusses his military career, but did not see any mention of what his rank was there. It would be good to find the basis for where this info came from and then re-add his rank into that section. -- Lexi sioz (talk) 09:31, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

Other than the D-Day beach landings, it is unknown if X experienced combat.
Other than The Battle of Britain, it is unknown if Y experienced combat.
Other than The Battle of Khe Sanh, it is unknown if Z experienced combat.
