Home town

[edit]

Eagle Lake is my home town. Four generations of my family have been raised there. My Grandpa knew it as Jamestown, LoRay township. It was then named after the lake near the town which used to be known for its walleye and northern. When I grew up, it was noted for pan fish and bull heads. Now it is just a mud hole.

My father used to tell the story of of how Mankato got it's name: a great Indian who lived in the area many years ago was out hunting with his bow and arrow when he saw a great eagle flying overhead. The Indian took an arrow from his quiver and placed it gingerly on the bow, he pulled back his bow, took aim, and killed the great eagle in mid flight. The head landed in Eagle Lake and the tail in Mankato.

The town was a growing community when my grandfather was the constable after WW1. My father was mayor for three terms and helped build up the area to what it is today. My father sold the land that belonged to our home in the 70s to a local developer, which is now called Wilson Addition. That ran from South Agency Street to the slough, which is now a playground. It is a bedroom community and has always been a peaceful gem tucked away from the bustle of Mankato.
