Undocumented PRR 5805 wreck rebuild
[edit]Pennsylvania Railroad E8A #5805 was wrecked at Chicago Union Station on March 10, 1954. The unit suffered a broken underframe behind the cab, a photo is on Flicker and an accident report is in the ICC train wreck database. A rebuild of this unit was accomplished on a new underframe. The same EMD serial number was used: 15669. No documentation of this rebuild has surfaced. The rebuilt unit was later renumbered PRR 4270, then PC 4270 and finally became NJTR 4270 as a parts source. The date of the rebuild likely later in 1954 is beyond any date associated with an E8A being rebuilt by EMD. --SSW9389 (talk) 17:19, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

Southern Pacific E8 #6018
[edit]In Joesph A. Strapac's book, SP Historic Diesels Volume 20, page 35 discusses the issue of the demonstrator E8 not having a painted number painted on it and being assigned #5600A to enable train numbers to be carried in the numberboards. It is the same demonstrator as what would become Rock Island E8A #643. SP E8 #6018 was not the demonstrator unit as it was instead part of a partially cancelled order, with its assigned construction number 9318 from order #2010 built in 1950. The unit was retired in August 1967. Espeegoober (talk) 00:43, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
