- Please see WP:BLP. This is the Wikipedia policy that governs material concerning living persons. It is a very strict policy, and it is taken very seriously here. I am concerned that your edits may not be in accord with it, and have accordingly reverted them. Because of the controversial nature of the material that you added, you should wait for further discussion before restoring it. Wikipedia editors are not obliged to notify other editors when they revert their edits (though there is an automatic system that does this). Wikipedia editors are also not obliged to give their real names. FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 20:53, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your feedback.
I have read WP:BLP, and do not see how my edits violates any the three principles it lists. I stated a fact (Torrey's appearance on CBS News was controversial), and gave a reference to the video of the program with feedback from presumed viewers illustrating that controversial response. As a licensed psychologist who has discussed Torrey's appearance with many of my colleagues in person and by email, I can tell you "controversial" is an understatement.
Then I stated another fact: literature on violence and mental health tends not to show there is a connection. I did not cite the classic Archives of General Psychiatry article on this point, which I could do, but a more recent study in the September 1, 2013 issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry. Since you have to pay to access that article, I used as a reference a September article in Psychiatric News (a journal published by the American Psychiatric Association) which discusses the research, and provides a link to an abstract of the original article.
I would appreciate knowing how you think my original edit violated one or more principles of WP:BLP.
Also, when you say I "should wait for further discussion," please let me know what you mean, and how long a wait I should expect.
Thanks. 64.61.22.43 (talk) 16:21, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
- You have misunderstood BLP if you think that it automatically permits one to state something in an article so long as it is a fact. BLP requires, among other things, that the principle of due weight be strictly observed (see WP:DUE). It may very well be true that Torrey appeared on CBS News and that his appearance was controversial, but that doesn't mean that this fact belongs in the lead of his Wikipedia article (you might have a better case if you wanted to include it somewhere else). It is also inappropriate to state in the lead that scientific research contradicts Torrey's views. That is using the article to try to discredit him, and it's quite unacceptable. Unless the research in question specifically mentions Torrey, it's not even relevant to this article. FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 19:39, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for getting back to me. You may be right about some of your claims. However, I think the lede and the Criticism section, which seems to have more on Torrey's criticisms of others than criticisms of Torrey, are too sanitized.Wikiwonderwhy101 (talk) 14:41, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
