[edit]This article appears to refer to the same thing as Gurbantunggut Desert. It is not clear what the standard English term is, or if there is one. This needs a local expert, or a good source. Benjamin Trovato (talk) 00:35, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Any clarifications are quite welcome! Thanks. Teledildonix314 Talk ~ contributions 05:37, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
- officially it's called Gurbantünggüt Shamo (Gurbantünggüt from UPNY and Shamo from Pinyin), often the English name change Shamo, Shan, etc. to Desert, Mountain, etc. --虞海 (Yú Hǎi) (talk) 07:48, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Google Web and Google Books searches show that all 8 books that use the term "Dzoosotoyn" relate a fact coming from, essentially, a single source - apparently, the Guinness Book of World Records mention of the Cranes' expedition. The thousands of web occurrences also, essentially, are based on the same single fact - coming from the Guinness Book (or other Crane-related sources) or our very own Wiki articles. Meanwhile Gurbantünggüt Desert, with or without umlauts, is used uniformly on maps and in all kinds of geographical literature. Accordingly, I'll merge Dzoosotoyn Elisen Desert into Gurbantünggüt Desert. Vmenkov (talk) 02:44, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
