Self Promotion
[edit]The Conflict of Interest warning notice was placed on this page in 2010 due to contributions made by people apparently closely associated with the subject of this article. I have no connection whatever with this individual nor am I especially familiar with their work. When I upgraded this biographical article, it seemed to me that the material was factual and did not go into excessive detail. Three years have passed since this notice was placed on this article and the general text as survived, so other WP editors apparently agree. After adding some content like the infobox, head shot and filmography from imdb, I removed the notice because it no longer seems applicable, and a 3 year posted warning ought to be sufficient notice.
I would not have made any remarks here about it except for the fact I saw that some self promotional material was recently added and was rightly reverted by a WP editor. I think it is fair to remove the COI notice because it is probably a no longer necessary blemish on a legitimate WP article. With that stipulated, whoever is contributing this material needs to understand that there are established standards against self promotion in particular and lack of neutral point of view in general. This is taken very seriously and it would be unwise to break these rules. Please read WP:NOTPROMOTION for details on wikipedia policy on this subject. If a new contributor, it would be a good idea to look at the other sections of this article defining what WP is not. If such contributors persist and further self promotional material is added, I would fully support resumption of the Conflict of Interest template warning.
I'm assuming good faith on the part of these contributor(s), and that they simply are not familiar with WP's policies. Often, the best authorities on a particular subject have close personal association with individuals or particular points of view regarding the material. I don't think that means such contributors are required to recuse themselves, but it does require heightened awareness of one's potential lack of impartiality. Further information is contained in a notice (quoted below) that is given possible violators of these WP guidelines.
- We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.
- All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.
- If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:
- Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
- Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
- Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
- Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.
- Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.
- For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations.
