- I'm not sure if Wikipedia is the appropriate place for complex diagrams of family genealogies. Especially since many of the people are non-notable. A list of notable members is OK, but the whole family shouldn't be here. --JW1805 (Talk) 05:22, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- See the section on "Genealogical entries" at Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not. --JW1805 (Talk) 05:28, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- In wrting about this family I am trying to address the particular problem of how a couple of dozen prominent and "encyclopediac" people are related to each other, particularly as their familial relationships are critical to their historical role. Genealogical information about this family is not "an indiscriminate collection of information," and is certainly "for people with some sort of fame, achievement, or perhaps notoriety." In this case the family as a whole is the subject, along with a couple of dozen individuals. Good articles about those individuals neccesarily must include much genealogical information, and my intent was to avoid duplicating it on each article, but simply referencing the family article. In many ways the Du Pont family is like a European royal family, and in fact, you will find articles on ancestors and descendents of royal families in Wikipedia, see Elizabeth II. Perhaps I have erred in including too much genealogical information, but honestly leaving it out would seem like "an indiscriminate 'omission' of information."
- Having said all this, I understand your concern, and have debated it myself. What do you think would be a good way to meet all the objectives?
stilltim 00:15, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- My concern about the genealogical information was that it contained many people who were not notable. I don't think simply being a member of the DuPont family is notable in itself. My view was that it was an indiscriminate collection of information. But, I could be wrong. We can discuss it, and you could put in a RfC to get other user's opinions. --JW1805 (Talk) 00:22, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
I have moved the comments here as you suggest. I am going to rebuild the listing, but dumb it down by including only minimal genealogical information and only those lines directly relevant to notable figures. Perhaps that will achieve all of our intent. stilltim 01:23, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- I put in a Request for comment so others can contribute. --JW1805 (Talk) 00:23, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
The present text is almost impossilbe to follow. I would prefer the indented form on the top of this page; it might alleviate JW1805's concerns if, for example, Alfred I. Dupont's seven non-notable children were reduced from:
- Eleuthera Paulina du Pont (1912-1912
- Samuel du Pont (1914-1914)
- Denise du Pont (1915-)
- Madeline du Pont (1887-)
- Bessie du Pont (1889-)
- Alfred Victor du Pont (1900-)
- Victorine du Pont (1903-)
to
- 7 children: , Madeline, Bessie, Alfred Victor, Victorine, Eleuthera Paulina (d. young); Samuel (d. young), Denise.
I like the article though. Septentrionalis 05:01, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
William DuPont Jnr.
[edit]Could somebody check this please, because at the moment William DuPont Jnr. is referred to as having been born in 1896 and then fathered himself, having previously fathered his brother Marion DuPont two years earlier. I think Mary Lammot DuPont was married to William DuPont Snr. (judging by ages). Are William DuPont Jnr. and his wife and children (whoever they actually are) notable? 172.215.41.204 12:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
Interfamily marriages
[edit]Eleuthère Irénée du Pont married Sophie Madeleine Dalmas (1775-1828) in 1791 and had the following children: Sophie Madeleine du Pont (1810-1888), married Samuel Francis du Pont, no children.
Victor Marie du Pont married Gabrielle Joséphine de la Fite de Pelleport and had the following children: Samuel Francis du Pont (1803-1865), married Sophie Madeleine du Pont, no children.
They were cousins? Do I read this correct? Marrying your cousin is perfectly fine in my country, and Im sure it was during this time, but as it certainly would be relevant to the article, was there any occurances of semi- or incestual relationships resulting in children?
Irénée du Pont married Irene Sophie du Pont (sister of Alexis Felix du Pont). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1201SLD (talk • contribs) 00:37, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Encyclopedic information?
[edit]Way to go wikipedia. Just a confusing and needless family tree? No other information as to why the family is notable? Not even one link to the du Pont chemical company? There are numerous sources, even on the internet, about the activities and notability of the family. Just more evidence that wikipedia is merely a dumping ground of useless information policed by shut in aspergers patients with nothing better to do but organize articles about professional wrestling or the simpsons.
- I have to agree with you here. This is so NOT an appropriate article. It's not even an article. In fact, I can't believe it's actually here and that no one has taken this down yet. Wikipedia will never gain an affluent status (my kids' high school teachers will not allow Wikipedia citations) if it continues down this road.MagnoliaSouth (talk) 01:50, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Apply for deletion?
[edit]This article does not belong here. Does anyone know how to delete it? if so, DO SO.
- Application accepted -the wiki entry was deleted. A better reference on the du Pont family is to be found in Jack Herer's The Emperor Wears No Clothes. [1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.67.81.197 (talk) 03:57, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
Capitalization
[edit]Perhaps it should be noted that "du Pont" is not standard French capitalization - when a name includes Le/La/Les or a contraction thereof it is typically capitalized - checking the Library of Congress name authority files, it looks like when the family emigrated later members started using a minuscule "D" - regardless, the whole section needs a source.Eldamorie (talk) 21:00, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- Nevermind, upon further investigation I appear to be completely mistaken. This page still needs sources though.Eldamorie (talk) 21:03, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
