"Boundaries" of Downtown
[edit]I would argue that the term "Downtown Sacramento" applies to a broader area than what the article suggests. I contemplated changing it myself, but I wanted to get other people's input. I have always refered to Downtown as anything East of the Sacramento River, North of Business 80/Highway 50 (WX Freeway), West of State Route 51/Bus 80, and South of C Street. Take a look at this map I created you can see the area I defined is the majority of the grid pattern in the central city area. The area that is defined in the article right now is very constricting. - I'd tend to agree, but do you have a source? ---J.S (T/C/WRE) 23:11, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
- SHAZAM! See this PDF. I just found it. It gives "Downtown Sacramento" roughly the boundaries I listed before. This one seems to define Dowtown by anything south of the American River, East of the Sacramento River, north of Hwy 50/Bus 80, and west of Bus 80/State Route 51. Killiondude (talk) 07:18, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, so I'd like to see if there's any consensus or whatever to changing what the article defines as what Downtown is. The article could still reflect its current boundaries as the Central Business District. Killiondude (talk) 07:20, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- I just changed the article to reflect what I wanted to do as far as changing what the article says as the boundaries for downtown. Well, with a minor change (I used Broadway as the southern boundary instead of the WY Freeway). I added some references to back up my assertion. I also searched through the Sacramento Bee's past articles, and they seem to use the word "downtown" to reflect anything in this "Central City" area (the area I changed the article to reflect) as well. Some instances include here and here. There are more examples if anyone would like me to look for more. Killiondude (talk) 08:46, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
- The E and S boundaries of Alhambra and Broadway (the grid area) seem best to me. But that is an opinion based on a personal comparison of downtown with the areas just outside of the grid and with the rest of the county. Some will disagree and argue that is is tall buildings that define a downtown. There can be no authoritative sources, because, it is all opinion and who is to say whose opinion is better? Even if there were to be an ordinance defining downtown, could a governmental body overcome other's opinions and miraculously change their minds? We are all blind and feeling the pavement with sticks; all we can do is reach a concensus with our stick tapping and to heck with the sign overhead that says, "Official Downtown Border." CampKohler (talk) 03:35, 26 December 2008 (UTC)CampKohler
- I contend that "Downtown" is a district that is well defined by the local government and does not include the entire grid. The City of Sacramento Neighborhood Services Department helps coordinate the various neighborhood associations throughtout they city and they break down the central city into as follows: http://www.cityofsacramento.org/ns/nadb/nad.cfm?areaid=1. As you can see, "Downtown" is limited to the central business district while the other parts of the central city area are considered separate neighborhoods such as Midtown, Alkali Flat, and Southside Park. An even more limited definition of Downtown is the one provided by the Downtown Partnership (a nonprofit organization that is the neighborhood assocation for downtown): http://www.downtownsac.org/DSPAPP/V/about/index.html. My next argument is not so scientific but it seems that those who refer to the entire grid was downtown are those that are less familiar with the region. For someone who lives in the suburbs, going to a bar at 21st & Q may be "going downtown" while anyone who lives in the grid would need to be going where the tall buildings are to be "going downtown". - Perhaps the article should reflect that sources differ about what downtown actually means. I have asserted that downtown meant the historic "core" of the city (the grid). The Sac Bee references "downtown" as any place in this grid as well, but community maps from the City and County differ. Some portray the central business district as downtown while other portray the grid as downtown. So we have two options. We can come to a consensus here (about the "boundaries") or we could change the article to reflect the differing opinions. Killiondude (talk) 09:31, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
More Exceptions
[edit]I would like to suggest that the "notable exception" be widened to include Alhambra Blvd., Broadway and Front Street. Surely these are just as notable as Capital in that locals automatically integrate them into the mental grid. And shouldn't Capital Mall be enlarged to Capital Mall/Avenue to reflect the name across the entire downtown area? CampKohler (talk) 03:35, 26 December 2008 (UTC)CampKohler
- I didn't think of that before. I just check on Google Maps. Broadway does take the place of what would have been "Z St." (in the alphabetical nomenclature of the streets from north to south), Front St. would be 1st St., and Alhambra would be 31st St. I'll fix the article, but in the future you could be bold and fix that. I think there would be no argument against changing the article about those facts. Killiondude (talk) 09:20, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
