DUI
[edit]Several users have attempted to remove any mention of Parker's 2007 DUI arrest. I've reinserted it, along with a citation. The arrest was widely reported by the media and, as such, deserves mention in this article. Billhpike (talk) 06:00, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Removed portion
[edit]I removed the following portion from the article:
- In an outstanding historical event, Mr.Parker decided that a merger between financially-troubled America West Airlines and bankrupt US Airways could provide the combined surviving carrier with the opportunity to create a very successful airline. The secret behind this very successful airline merger was that while in bankruptcy, US Airways could divest itself of many aircraft leases and airport gates and other multiple items that were not profitable. Duplicate routes between the two carriers could then be combined into routes with fewer airplanes flying them, while still transporting the same number of passengers. This lowered the cost of operating those routes sometimes to fifty percent, while still enjoying the same revenues.
- Simple plan and perhaps many other CEOs had thought about it before, but Doug Parker did more than just think about it, he implemented it.
- The plan was ambitious and risky, but Parker and his team put together substantial capital and proceeded with the merger, creating one of the most daring success stories in the airline industry. The combined airline retained the US Airways name instead of the America West name, and in the year 2006 it far exceeded any financial projections it had filed with the government prior to gaining authority for the merger.
- The most optimistic figures for 2006 initially filed by Mr.Parker and his group had approximated a projected EBITD of 150 million, taking into account a price of $58 per barrel of oil. The actual price for a barrel of oil eventually exceeded the amount of $58 per barrel, but even then the airline managed to generate over 500 million dollars in EBITD for the 2006 year.
- Doug Parker gained instant fame world-wide, with his exploits being published in many languages and his name making the rounds of aviation circles everywhere. His boyish optimism and his honesty became the trademark of the "new" airline top executive. Mr.Parker has demonstrated to the airline industry that he is an "airline man," in contrast to the CEOs of airlines who are merely interested in using the revenues generated by their airlines to pursue other interests not related to aviation. The merger between America West Airlines and US Airways guaranteed the survival of both carriers. This survival saved the jobs of forty thousand Americans.
I removed it because:
- It is unsourced, although most of it looks relatively solid.
- It seems to constitute original research.
- The tone doesn't seem to be encyclopedic.
- As much as I think Doug Parker is the best thing for the airline industry since Jet airplanes (okay I'm exaggerating a bit) this section definitely has a strong POV to it.
- This section seems to want to make history out of a relatively recent event. Remember the world will not end tomorrow.
I'd like to see a section containing this info on the article, I just don't have time to do it, and I don't think this is the right content for right now.. —Cliffb 06:31, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Doug Parker disambiguation
[edit]Hi there. I'd like to see the Doug Parker page point to a disambiguation page. The applicable guidelines suggest looking at the number of links to different articles as one test to determine if a certain article should be the primary topic. There are 10 unique incoming links to the airline exec's page, and 22 unique incoming links to the voice actor's page.
I don't dispute that the airline exec is likely the best-known Doug Parker in the English-speaking world, but a search for "Doug Parker" turns up quite a few other Doug Parkers of interest:
- Airline exec
- wikipedia page
- -- wikipedia page
- Voice actor
- Airline exec
- Airline exec
- Voice actor
- Designer
- Airline exec
- SciFi enthusiast?
- Web developer
- Airline exec
- -- Airline exec
- Wrestling competition named after wrestling coach
- British professor
- Wrestling coach
- Airline exec
- Airline exec
- Voice actor
- Airline exec
From this list, potentially notable Doug Parkers include the US Airways airline exec, the American voice actor, the British professor[1], and the NCAA Hall of Fame inductee wrestling coach (who has an annual American wrestling competition named after him)[2]. - Anirvan (talk) 06:04, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
Proposed changes/fixes
[edit]I've posted several proposed edits and factual corrections here: User:Josh Freed/Doug Parker, along with explanations for my suggestions. Because I work for the company, I don't plan to make these edits myself, but I hope other editors will read this over and make any changes they agree with. Appreciate any feedback or additional suggestions.
