New Research
[edit]A new biogrpahy (in fact, the only one to date) has been writen on this little-known and under-appreciated writer. I'd suggest a clean-up and re-write in light of this new piece of research. Belacqua Shuah 19:32, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
Religion
[edit]Someone has written that Dorothy Macardle was raised as a Roman Catholic; this is based on an article in The Irish Times. But from Tim Pat Coogan's book on de Valera, it seems that she died a Protestant. Coogan gets his information from Michael Moynihan, who interviewed de Valera, Millbanks (talk) 07:51, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- It's puzzling. In the record of MacArdle in the 1911 census the information on her religion is listed as 'refused'. The two younger children of the family, however, are Roman Catholic. Her mother (and Englishwoman) is described as a 'freethinker', which generally meant atheist or agnostic, and it's possible Dorothy had indeed been raised Catholic, but now regarded herself as something similar. The only persuasive evidence for MacArdle having been raised Protestant appears to be in the fact she attended Alexandra College - a Church of Ireland school. The article would read better if it were possible to track down some account of when and why she altered her religious beliefs. ANB (talk) 19:23, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- Is it very relevant if she was not notable for her religiosity? Obviously she did not describe herself a Catholic, or practice as a Catholic, and there are many varieties of Protestantism. Alexandra College was (is?) run as an Anglican school but many of its staff are not Anglicans. This is more interesting to Irish Catholics, to whom she was a heretic, than to anyone else - including her.86.43.179.189 (talk) 10:42, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
- Luke Gibbons is a social commentator but may not have chased down her original baptismal certificate. A lapsed Catholic maybe, and if so clever her for working that one out.86.43.187.233 (talk) 19:57, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
