List of Medals

[edit]

Where is it? 109.159.119.220 (talk) 16:47, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We do not have a reliable source for his medals that I can find. Hell in a Bucket (talk) 17:55, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There's an image of his dd214 on a local news site that did a story on him that lists his medals/awards. Also gives his birthday as 7 July 1961. Would it be considered a reliable source under WP rules?

Early life

[edit]

Hello Mdann52, Why did you revert Don's Early life to empty? Alrich44 (talk) 15:15, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Who is he? Where is he from? Who are his family? His videos make it clear he is agnostic, what faith was he raised in? These are all things that appear in most biographies, and they should be here.

And why *did* someone revert his early life to empty? 2A00:23C5:E0A0:8300:E9F3:45F:D11E:B97F (talk) 00:25, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

SEAL-like

[edit]

Looks like either Don or someone close to him is editing again. The first time I came across this an IP editor had stolen the Don Shipley page from the Canadian Don Shipley, deleted it.

SEAL training, as in US Navy SEAL training is done by the US Navy. So, another word should qualify Don's training, this was originally SEAL-like. Maybe another qualifier would be clearer. Alrich44 (talk) 12:11, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • The writing style is suspiciously like Shipley's, it includes little quirks of his writing that appear on his youtube channel and website, such as hyphenating descriptions of time (EG, "24 years" written as "24-years"). It also includes some quirks that are less particular to him but common among people who have spent a lot of time in the military, such as capitalising common nouns ("Booby Traps") This doesn't necessarily mean it's him (And in my completely subjective impression of the man, writing himself a Wikipedia article isn't something he would do), it could just as easily be someone cutting and pasting text from his website, especially since there are a few phrases that are quoted from it word for word. 110.32.154.34 (talk) 07:03, 23 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not only does it look like Shipley's writing, it is his. The whole section on military service is directly copied from copyright material on his website Who owns Extreme SEAL. Either someone has plagiarised the site, or he has plagiarised himself. Marchino61 (talk) 01:16, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Extreme SEAL Experience Closed

[edit]

Not sure of the exact date but it says on the main page it has closed and he now runs/owns a non profit. Wanted to put this out there before editing. [1], [2]. Ala Bahma (talk) 01:34, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dispute

[edit]

I would dispute the use of Shipley's site as a reference to anything on Wikipedia, as such constitutes "original Research" which violates Wikipedia Policy. 24.182.207.10 (talk) 20:54, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That's a losing dispute. It isn't being used to promote his site and it is used to flesh out the article. It clearly omits any claims about specific people and simply state that his website professionally produces videos on people they claim to be a fake seal. The language could be more neutral but nothing is inappropriate as it stands that would warrant the removal. Original research only counts as something we watch for when we use that research to prove a point or research. Hell in a Bucket (talk) 18:41, 16 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Hell in a Bucket. The reference is simply there to explain what he does. 2600:1700:7A51:10B0:9475:5865:BAE1:C3E5 (talk) 17:16, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

To update on this, I am making an effort to find 3rd party sources to use where we can. When possible removing the site as a reference is our best bet for credibility. There will be incidences this will be not needed but whenever we can we should be using the outside sourcing. Hell in a Bucket (talk) 16:30, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Son

[edit]

Also a seal. Worth a mention? 109.159.118.71 (talk) 16:20, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Proabbly nothing more then a small blurb that would adhere to BLP. Source it accurately and reliably and probably not a big deal as long as it isn't given WP:UNDUE attention. Hell in a Bucket (talk) 19:26, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Son in law, too. His only daughter married one. 2A00:23C3:E284:900:8401:F6AC:C82E:A7CA (talk) 17:53, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

So, what about a family reference? Son is D.J. Shipley, who runs the art therapy group Sk8z in Virginia Beach; who is the daughter? And are there other children? This must all be sourced before being put in the article, of course. 213.205.200.18 (talk) 20:10, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Youtube Channel Terminated

[edit]

I just noticed on 2/23/2019 that his youtube channel now says: "This account has been terminated due to multiple or severe violations of YouTube's policy prohibiting content designed to harass, bully or threaten."Buds131. I assume this is noteworthy. Will look for citable sources before adding it to his page.Kire1975 (talk) 07:52, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV and source improvement review

[edit]

This is an area that people feel strongly about. I highly value and respect the work Don does but I thought the article could use a more neutral and less crusading tone. I made several changes and anticipate that more may need made but they are probably minor. Does any one have an opinion on [[3]] and if the other version was better, keeping NPOV in mind. Hell in a Bucket (talk) 16:34, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I like the change. It is definitely more neutral and the interested reader can learn more (and develop their own opinion) from reading the sources. MartinezMD (talk) 18:26, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks my only reservation had been that I had made it too mellow but you are right there are still loads of vids for people to make their own opinion. Hell in a Bucket (talk) 18:29, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
YW. I think it will be fairly obvious to a viewer that Don is legitimately calling out a bunch of fakers. However, it's easier to just let the videos speak for themselves than worry about the tone of the article and having to defend and source his activities.MartinezMD (talk) 18:46, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
