"Don't Make Waves" is a High Quality Movie

"Don't Make Waves" was actually a good movie when it came out. I was a Freshman at UC Berkeley and was impressed with its outlandish plot, subplots and sense of Southern California Americana, not to mention Sharon Tate, who stole the show. The mudslide at the end was a brilliant closing to the movie. And the plush cinemascope color was fantastic. I taught at Cal Arts for a while when Mackendrick was teaching there and didn't know him that well but he seemed like a nice guy compared to the rest of the staff (Cal Arts doesn't have a tenure system so there's a lot of academic backstabbing going on). Sharon Tate could of been the biggest movie star in America--all us young guys back then were really ticked off when she was murdered. It was the worse case of a waste of a human life that I can recall. Terrific movie though, really entertaining. And Claudia Cardinale was really cute. Movies from the 1960's were actually really good, using high quality filmstock, professional art direction, great camera work and editing. They're a class of movies unto themselves. In the 1970's movies lost their quality sheen and started looking grainy and amateurish. "Don't Make Waves" is iconographic and rather than being a genre film is quite unique in its own right.
