I started the article. This technique is being used in new malware. I haven't had much time to work on this. There are TONS of research papers that can be found by googling this article's name and looking for PDF files in particular.
Not all of these thousands of potential domains actually get registered
[edit]I had an initial misunderstanding about this which caused me to look into it further. I think it should be pointed out that "generating a domain name" is not the same as registering a domain. It did not make sense to me how 50,000 domains could be economically or automatically registered every day, which is what I thought was the implication (because isn't the DNS system regulated?). I looked into it further and found one of the references to explain, "From the point of view of botnet owner, the economics work out quite well. They only have to register one or a few domains out of the several domains that each bot would query every day." (the 'Detecting Algorithimically Generated Malicious Domain Names', Sandeep Yadav reference). I feel this point should be clarified in the wikipedia article. 212.26.44.101 (talk) 07:10, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
True. I also did not understand that. Will add it here. Zezen (talk) 09:21, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

I have just modified one external link on Domain generation algorithm. Please take a moment to review my edit. If you have any questions, or need the bot to ignore the links, or the page altogether, please visit this simple FaQ for additional information. I made the following changes:
- Added archive https://archive.is/20130203001959/http://mtc.sri.com/Conficker to http://mtc.sri.com/Conficker

Article explains the 'what' well but the 'why' not so much
[edit]It took me multiple readings to understand the practical value of DGA implementation but even then I'm less than certain I get it.
Could a summary sentence about why DGA is used be added in the first paragraph ith the existing text left as a longer explanation?
Didn't want to spend time working on an edit i fnobody agrees it's necessary.
Too many bad wikipedia experiences. PXumm (talk) 16:17, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
