German Spelling of Dolgov: Dolgow

[edit]

In Germany, the Russian name Dolgov is spelled "Dolgow", which is in accordance with German spelling of Slavic names. Germany east of the Elbe River was inhabited by Slavic tribes (mostly Gentiles, the so-called Wends) as far as Lübeck (called Liubice by its Slavic founders) and the so-called Wendland in Lower Saxony. Mecklenburg was ruled until the the first German Republic in 1918 by a Wendish family, the so-called Abotrites (House of Mecklenburg), and the current Prime Minister of Saxony Stanislaw Tillich is of Wendic origin, a member of the Sorbic ethnic minority. "Dolgow" is the name of a village in Wendland and also a common family name in that region.
