Who made the first recording?
[edit]Some sources say that Regney and Shayne originally asked the Harry Simeone Chorale to record the song first, before Bing Crosby did. Please can you verify this for me? Thank you very much. Yip1982 06:05, 4 August 2007 (GMT)
Removal of copyrighted lyrics
[edit]Will it be best if the copyrighted lyrics to the song were removed? The song is not yet in the public domain.Yip1982 09:40, 1 November 2007 (UTC)Yip1982
“a tail as big as a kite”
[edit]On a surface reading, the line “with a tail as big as a kite” is idiotic. Is there some meaning of “kite” here besides
- a tethered flying fabric-covered frame
- a sort of ship's sail
- a carrion-eating bird
- a fraudulent financial instrument
If so, then the reader should be informed, to end bewilderment and to exonerate the composers. —SlamDiego←T 03:20, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
To answer SlamDiego, English wasn't the lyricist's first language (he was a Frenchman) so it really does mean the fabric-covered frame. Gloria wanted to change it, but Noel refused to let her. Idiotic it may be, but many people find it evocative. Lyrics are not an essay. -Rewichan
- There is another possible explanation. A nuclear missile on launching has a kite-like vapour tail.101.98.175.68 (talk) 02:29, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
