Question re DYK
Hi Kosack, BlueMoonset, I have been expanding this interesting article (another related to the COVID-19 situation), and wanted to clarify the 5x expansion requirement for DYK. I can see that I am up to 16,754 bytes and 6,545 characters of prose. The last main edits were from 24 February 2020, and had 3,640 bytes (I would be at a 4.6x expansion on net bytes added basis), but I cannot see how to work out the characters of prose? Also, I have deleted some existing paragraphs (they were tangential and not directly linked to Disease X), and don't know if I get credit for that in the DYK expansion calculations (e.g. is there a gross bytes added basis)? Thanks in advance. Britishfinance (talk) 22:17, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
- Britishfinance, there is a general expectation that the article needs to be nominated within seven days of the beginning of the expansion. Using the WP:DYKcheck software (the link explains not only how to install the software for your own, but how else to determine your prose character count), it says that the article is currently at 6,652 prose characters, and is 5x expanded from the version of the article as of [before the additions on] March 18, 2020 (when it had 1,254 prose characters). So you can nominate it any time between now and March 25 (seven days after March 18) with perfect safety. Congratulations, and good luck with the nomination! - Thanks for that BlueMoonset - I wasn't aware of that tool :) Britishfinance (talk) 22:31, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

- ... that the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic is rapidly becoming the first true pandemic challenge that fits the World Health Organization's Disease X category"? Bloomberg, New York Times
- ALT1 ... that experts on the World Health Organization's emergency committee believe that the SARS-CoV-2 virus (pictured) has created the first Disease X?

5x expanded by Britishfinance (talk). Self-nominated at 00:25, 21 March 2020 (UTC).
- Article is new enough and long enough; before March 18 there were 1254 characters of readable prose, so an expansion would need to be at least 6270 characters; the page currently has 7797 characters of readable prose. No reason for concern about policy violations; the article is neutrally written and very well-sourced. Both the hook and ALT1 are supported by the sources given, are under 200 characters, are neutral, and are interesting. I think that the first suggested hook will be noticeably out of date by the time this hits the front page, so I suggest ALT1, but there's a note on that one too: there's a comma mistake in ALT1, which is one sentence spliced by a comma that should just be removed. The picture is included in the article, and the image is licensed under Attribution 2.0 Generic. QPQ was done. Great article! I am a first-time DYK reviewer, so per the intro of the reviewing guide, I invite a second opinion for my review. - Astrophobe (talk) 16:48, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks Astrophobe, and I agree that ALT1 is probably better now, and have taken out the comma. Britishfinance (talk) 16:59, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
