Talk:Dimetric projection
Appearance
The simulation games mentioned (as well as the Civilization series)use a very specific dimetric projection--the grid is always twice as wide as it is tall. (Ref: http://moonsims.asi.org/tech/objects-4.html) You get that view by rotating the object of interest by 45 degrees in the horizontal plan, then view from an infinite distance 30 degrees above the horizontal plane.
The 2:1 ratio (as well as having a height and width in even powers of 2) avoids a lot of floating point operations when you're painting the image on the screen. Is there a name for that specific type of projection? Greg 06:00, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- Informally I have often seen it called "2:1 isometric" by artists (as opposed to e.g. "4:3 isometric" used in some other games). This is simply the ratio of a single floor tile - so a "true isometric" tile would be "2:1.154" by that naming scheme. --Allefant 15:50, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
