Difference?

[edit]

between a Dertrivore and a Saprovore?(sp) ? Seem t o be the same thing, both link from the -vore page

Saprovores eat specific dead biomass, such as carcasses or leaf litter. They are not really detrivores per-say, but these things tend to form detris — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mnidjm (talkcontribs) 16:51, 24 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposals

[edit]

I propose that Deposit feeder and Saprotroph be merged into Detritivore. Anxietycello (talk) 03:00, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now part of a larger discussion; feel free to join in here. Thanks :) Anxietycello (talk) 02:48, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sediment denitrification

[edit]

Should there be a separate article for sediment denitrification to discuss creatures like decapods that "chew" sand for the biofilm or do editors think that should be covered here? Boston (talk) 18:00, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Illustrations

[edit]

I removed the woodlouse image since I think it would be better to represent the multiple kingdoms of Detritivores then having two animals. A nice presentation of 3 images, animal, fungi and bacteria would probably be nice. I'll see if I can find a good bacteria example. — raeky (talk | edits) 02:22, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to get a good image of Actinomycetes, but the best we have illustrating it in soil is File:Actinomycetes.jpg and is very poor quality. — raeky (talk | edits) 03:01, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology

[edit]

Epiphyte is an organism growing on a plant. Is Saprophyte a PLANT growing on dead matter, or an organism growing on dead PLANT material? The page doesn't make this clear. Certainly in general use it's assumed to be the former but that doesn't necessarily make it the correct meaning.

The latter is a more useful term. It still has meaning and mirrors necrophage for feeding on dead animals.

Remove image of fungi?

[edit]

This article states that fungi are decomposers, not detrivores. Dberard (talk) 05:13, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Spliting Saprophages and Detrivores

[edit]

I am splitting the Saprophagy information into its own article, as this is a distinct topic from detrivores. Detrivore refers to mobile species that move in search of detritus, such as earthworms, while saprophages refers to sessile species that mine gathered resources. Photo of butterflies misplaced

[edit]

The photo of the butterflies should be removed. They are sucking up minerals and are not consuming the feces, so they are not detritivores. Dogo (talk) 21:00, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
